I gank for two reasons.
I'm often looking to start a fight. If I gank every person I see as I pass through a zone, either they will call level 80's on me, or get on their own and try to take me down.
When they rolled a character on a PvP realm, they were honestly expecting the levelling to be a treacherous journey. When they see that ? mage passing by and they're half expecting to get ice lanced to death, I don't want to let them down do I?
On the other hand, as I level up, I welcomed gank attempts by roughly equal level assailants. Fending off an attack by a character on the same playing field as you really helps break the monotony of quest grinding in my opinion (especially since most gankers as you level are inexperienced people who truly are new to the game, meaning an easy win for a vet).

for some reason, ganking lowbie is funny, by funny i mean, its just fun to see them die in a single blow, and cmon, you all were ganked before when you are lowbies
i remember being ganked by 70s alliance when i was on Tarren Mill, and sometimes now i go to TM 30min before Maintenance to have fun ganking them back, as i want them (alliance) to feel what i felt when i was once a lowbie
and yes, i will gank anything that is a Gnome or Dwarft, even if they saw me and /wave /love or whatever i will jump on them, i just hate Gnome so much that i will feel bad if i dont kill them on sight,
for those who dont like to get ganked / camped, there are always PvE server available for transfer ( i was once on PVE realm, seeing how frustrating it is to see a Gnome pass by without killing them, i decided to move to a PvP sever, lol )

Because you can't get punched in the face through a computer. In other words, people do it to be tough.

I think I'd have to agree with this one.

boredom mostly. Once you have nothing left to do in game but raid, its either gank, farm, or level an alt. theres really not much else to do.

Ganking is, quite simply, the most fun reason to level engineering. I like to get creative with my ganks.
For instance, my personal favorite is dropping an
Explosive Decoy
right next to an opposing flight path ending (where the flightmaster WAS before I killed it) and then detonating them with
this
when someone lands.
Other options include the
Gnomish Lightning Generator
and the
wrist rocket
, among other things.
Sooooo many options...
To be honest, ganking is fun, and anyone who doesn't think so takes the game way to seriously, imho

Or they just find different things fun ...?
Hey now, I never said that people who think ganking is fun actually do it. It's perfectly understandable they find other things more enjoyable. I, however, enjoy taking the time to assault low-level towns. Not more than raiding, but whenever I'm not raiding or getting materials for my latest engineering creations, its a fun alternative.
