DPS from a tank is just as good as DPS from a dedicated DPSer. The mobs get just as injured (or dead) from a thousand tank damage as a thousand mage damage. Usually the tank builds that try to increase DPS output sacrifice very little or nothing at all in terms of survivability. For example, you can pick up deep wounds without losing any useful survivability talents at all.

Since when did a tanks dps suddenly become a concern? Isn't the primary objective of a tank to produce threat and hold aggro? Yes, I know that that dps does add some threat, but really....really? I was under the distinct impression that it was the fancy abilities we have (and some pretty sweet ones I might add) that have the "produces a high amount of threat" tag that were important.
I guess you haven't been around in the last few months? They changed it so that your threat comes from your damage. No longer are the days we spam Sunder Armor for threat. As of now, damage = threat. The more you do, the higher your threat and the more damage your raid can push out.
Instead of saying l2tank, you should really catch up on what has been going on for the past couple of months.

Keep in mind that the faster the mobs die the less damage you take, so doing slightly more damage from say, Deep Wounds rather than having that one extra point in Shield Block would be a better choice.

On fights such as thaddius, for example, healers are sometimes being asked to dot up the boss to beat the enrage timer.
Guilds which cleared all current content in first few weeks of release of the patch didn't have the same gear as you do now. Sacrificing a few survival points for dps is more than made up by the huge difference in gear. Currently there's really no gear checks for tanks ... maybe except for patchwerk, but that's more of avoidance check, or if you have 2 offtanks - than healer check.
DPS is now more important to beat timers than it was in BC. Bosses seem to hit for less, for example the dog boss in naxx with skeletons takes forever to reset because he hits for like 5k or so - after a wipe is called, I just sit (to get auto-crited) and have to keep sitting down few times before dying.
I also heard that dps on Mally can pull boss off tank if they get enough sparks. So threat isn't truly infinite. KT often drops threat, so getting it back up fast while locks have dotted boss, and mages are blasting away at it, is very important.
I think if you look at tanks in top guilds, they all have points invested in threat, which could have been used to increase survivability. My guess is they are not doing it wrong.

can you link your armory so we know what you mean by a max survival spec?
pretty much everything to say has been said is this thread already: tps comes largely from dps now, deep wounds doesn't sacrifice survivability, there is no fight in the game that you can't tank with a deep wounds spec, threat definitely is an issue on malygos, fights are tuned for tanks contributing a certain level of dps, etc...
1% shield block is 1% more survivability PLUS the additional threat/damage providing from damage shield
more SBR does not increase damage shield in any way; HOWEVER, deep wounds increases your aoe threat significantly.

Threat isnt an issue anymore so tanks should really concentrate on damage mitigation. Tanks can do good dps now yes but its not their job, staying alive is far more important
And this sediment changes as you progress in your "career" as a tank. When you are first starting raids, and your DPS and healers aren't geared, you remain super focused on Stamina and Avoidance, even though you may only have 8 expertise and 90 hit rating.
However, as you get going and want to pick up speed, or hit harder fights that are DPS races, or start do to hard modes, your focus will definitely shift and the tank should start focusing more on how much damage they are putting out and how much threat they are giving to the raid.
Yes, sometimes on certain fights you want to have as much stamina or as much avoidance as you can possibly put in your gear. But to say that your damage or your threat is unimportant is incorrect.
