As a raider, I use FA quite a bit. I try to keep it maxed out on my other toons as well. Cloth drops all the time. No reason why ya shouldn't have at least a stack of bandages. It really helps in raids to save healers mana.

I do level up first aid on my Tailor mage, because it does help to decrease the downtime slightly.
But I'm surprised no one mentioned this, but it's also usefull because it's the only way a mage can remove all those pesky poison.

I have 375 First aid on my holy pally.
Why?
Because I never use any cloth, can't be bothered to put it on the AH, and bandages vendor for twice as much as the raw cloth.

First aid is significantly more useful if you have a way to avoid getting hit for the 8 seconds or so it takes to fully tick -- roots, fear, frost nova, etc. I got 375 FA on my pally alt as soon as she got to 35 (had to get rid of all that netherweave somehow) and at the moment she can still heal herself to max with it as long as she has enough mana to bubble first.

Every class at every level should have first aid. You may not always need it but it helps a lot when you do.
Not to mention if you get to level 70 and don't get your first aid maxed out raiding guilds are going to think you are a noob and avoid you.

Several people have made this general claim, but I just want to make it explicit: FA is one of only 2 form of self-healing for combat classes that you can use IN COMBAT. Potions are expensive on the AH and the drop-rate in the world is lower than my needs. Cloth drops all the time and I can make my own bandages.
As a hunter, I drop a frost trap and can bandage myself and my pet ('mend pet' takes mana, and if I need to bandage to live I'll probably need the mana to cause hurt!) before the mob is free -- and that is often enough to get me out of tight spots.
