Disc vs Holy
Return to board index

Who is better for healing and why? Discipline traditionally was centered around pvp and still is the the best pvp spec, but lately, sometime in BC and even more common in Wrath, discipline is being used more in raid healing.
Is the traditional holy priest loosing it's edge?
What makes one better than the other?

Imho, disc is used in raids, but usually not raid healing.
rule of thumb: Disc is for dmg prevention, holy is for health recovering..
aka, DISC is best used on tanks, while holy is best of the 2 on raid healing,
i know its not as black and white as i said above, yet i cant make it more clear then this ;P

MadGuy is pretty spot on here.
Discipline: Single target healing, damage prevention and mitigation, small but fast heals
Holy: Multi-target/AoE healing, larger but slower heals
Both have their pros and cons and both had important roles. Either can heal a 5-man just fine. For raids it's best to have no more than 2 Discipline priests, preferably each with his own tank; or best just one Discipline priest on the tanks with another healer handling the rest.

...Umm, I've never been a disc healer and I could do a better job than him...I at least know the concept, something he can't seem to fathom.
If you like GH, great! roll holy!

...yes, he definately is a holy priest...no mater what his talents say.
Let me guess, he's also a fan of Renew?

Renew is still useful for a disc priest, and the Imp version is much better than say...divine fury.

Like I said, I've never healed as disc, but from what I've been told, Renew isn't mana efficient for disc priests.

It is one of our tools, and it is quick. You can throw an instant renew on a party member and jump back to the tank very quickly. I also keep renew up on the tank 100% of the time after combat begins.
I love all my disc spells, but renew is very useful as well. Some disc priests would rather spam flash heal than use renew. The bottom line is keeping the party alive, which ever spell suits your style.

Holy can also be good for tank spamming. Surge of Light and Improved Holy Concentration (in the current build) with EITHER crit or haste gear can make for very fast heals. Crit will give you more free heals but haste can improve snipe healing and GCDs when you need to switch targets. Embrace of the Spider and/or Egg of Mortal Essence for massive haste procs. Add in instant Mending (on a 7 sec rather than 10 sec CD) and Circle (glyphed for 6 hits) for more chances to crit and thus proc free spells. I've never had a "heal-off" with a full discipline priest but I've always been an excellent tank healer. I've seen approximately 3 Flash Heals fire in about 1 second with everything proccing (which is quite frequent; something is ALWAYS proccing in raids) and Greater Heal under 1.5 seconds.
Discipline is more about survivability, buffs, and defensive "oh crap" buttons. I want at least one discipline priest in any 25 man for those reasons, and it shines in PvP obviously. But for raw power healing on single or multiple targets, I prefer deep holy.
We got anothe one...you may be able to outheal a discipline healer in raw power, but a good discipline healer can keep any tank worth his gear alive and never run out of mana doing it. In that sense they are much more closely related to pallies. And your right, holy is much more versatile in multiple heals.
