- Gigaflux
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=9492
drops from last boss in Gnomer (acts as a lightning sheild - buff stays on even after you take off the helm so get the buff up then switch to your standard helm)
- Central Core
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=9458
Last boss in Gnomer aswell
- Fist of Stone
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=17943
the mana returning equivalent of
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=10804
which you already have shown. Drops off Landslide in Mara (the giant fella) who coincidently drops a wicked Helm:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=17734
so keep running Mara till ya get both :)
- Naglering
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=11669
drops from BRD the Golem Lord Argelmach
- Epix
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=11684
Drops off the emporer in BRD (Last boss) i have absolutely no idea how this would work with reckoning, but this could be an absolute gem for the Prot Pallie Grinder
- Trinket
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=11810
Drops in BRD off General Angerforge, tasty bit of mitigation and even more from the proc, whats not to love!
- Trinket 2
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=11815
Okay so maybe not the usual thing, as opposed to being a reflective effect or proc on taking dmg/being hit its when you are swinging away, however think of this in combination with reckoning and Ironfoe and you could be looking at some crazy HP/Mana returns.
- Libram
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=22400
Officially the lowest obtainable Libram in game, though the effect may appear small, it is free mitigation...
- Razor Fists
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=18326
Drops in DM East off the satyr Alzinn the Wildshaper.
Once again that's one impressive list :) I've added the parts that i liked the most (most of it really) some things i skipped though.
Might also be useful to show a link to all the types of sheild spike availible too. The top under 70 one is a recipe from Faction rep of a TBC faction, thus the number of crafters decreases dramatically. The Thorium one is perhaps rarer still so you may have to be stuck with Mithril for quite a while, i know i was at least.
Yea the rarity of shield spikes is what kept me from using them at all when i leveled my paladin.
Playing on a low pop server, being outnumbered by 4:1 by the other faction didnt help either.
I added a link to all the shield spikes available.
---
To clear up what i look for when adding extraordinary gear.
The most important thing is that it helps you AoE. This is weights the heaviest.
Things like "Equip: When struck in combat inflicts x Arcane damage to the attacker."
Another important part is utility.
Like "Chance on hit: Grants x extra attacks on your next swing."
I also try and compare to items of the same obtainable level.
This is because the list is not to be clogged up and seeing as it is a guide the information has to be useful.
Later this evening i'll be adding a breakdown on Reckoning uptime and how it scales with the amount of mobs hitting you.

I've written a thread on Reckoning uptime
here
feel free to check it out and contribute if you can.
The link is also in the guide under the talent builds.

Maybe I am missing something but aren't we supposed to run with Ret Aura up ALL the time.. So why put 3 talents in Imporved Devotion Aura?
Imp. Devotion Aura
Increases the armor bonus of your Devotion Aura by 50%
and increases the amount healed on any target affected by
any of your Auras
by 6%.
There's your answer :)

Love this guide so far :) - but i just noticed a (possibly) glaring error. Your level 40 build omits Holy Shield... Not sure if this is intentional or not, but even it is on purpose i'd advise you change it as it really does rock for AoE grinding.

Glad to see that you like it :)
Yea that's my bad rushed to get the talents up for 3.1 then didnt really look back on them.
The builds are there to show that at 40 per example you should be taking HS before filling out sacred duty.
So i've fixed that now :) Thanks for letting me know!
Just wanted to update on my paladin:
I just hit 70 and I decided not to go with the whole grinding thing, contrary to this guide. Simply because the mobs never really spawned quick enough for me. Or I'm just really impatient. However, what I did do was "grind while questing".
I would pick up all the quests in the area, and run around going wherever Quest Helper points me to and grind mobs along the way. If I see a bunch of mobs around that I can aoe, I clear them and move along if they don't spawn quick enough. Normally, I would avoid ranged attackers but I would use silence (or run up to them), or do whatever to get them to stay within melee range.
Most quests require to us to kill X number of mobs, or loot Y number of quest items anyway. 3-4 pulls would complete a quest most of the time.
Another advantage to leveling as prot is you probably won't have a problem finding a group to do some instances. I didn't, but sometimes nice guildies help too.
You can use this guide for your playstyle as well. The guide is more of a "aoe'ing as prot" guide than a strict AoE grinding guide. Ofcourse it's biased towards the latter and the whole "where to go and when" section is solely for grinding.
But all the tips and tricks go for all prot AoE'ing and so does the talent builds.
Leveling as prot is fun and easy all the way. Might not be as fast as ret on the "kill this guy for that thing over there" quests but you can solo alot more group quests :)

I have looked through all of the builds and changed errors and updated to better reflect recent data (reckoning uptime mostly).
If you find anything you think is misleading/wrong/doubtful or just plain confusing say so and i'll try to explain or fix it :)
Cheers.

just had an extra thought which after reading through i didn't find...
When pulling ranged mobs (usually one or two amongst a load of melee) if you run up to them they will more often than not start to attack you with their melee attack, you can then back away very slowly, to re-position mobs (so you don't step into its ranged area) and it will continue to hit you with its melee attack. In this way you can solve the issue with ranged mobs (to an extent).
The downside to this is that if they have a net/entrapment like ability you've just gone and lost them as they'll sprint away from you.
I know that LOS pulling is better but where this isn't really an option the above method works wonders
P.S.definately needs work on the wording if you want to chuck that in ;)

Yea i never copy paste anything here ;p Either i use my own words or provide a link :) ( atleast then i am responsible for poor grammar and spelling ;p )
I'll try and fit it in the tips, tricks & techniques section later this evening :)

Hello! Níce guide svirve!
Im kind of new at this game but I have followed the guide so far and now I´ve hit lvl 65 with my protpala.
When you "masterskilledelitedudes" =) using words? like AOE, OOM, LOS I´m kind of Offside, so It might be good if you could explain what these words stands for.(If you got the time ofcourse)
Here is my char
http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Neptulon&n=Larsgunnar
I try to get things with stamina, strenght, agility and def.
I´ve got the Petrified Lichen Guard with spike. Would it do til I hit 80 or should I try finding I new one?
Is my Flurry Axe ok? Should I get the Iron foe instead?
And I know I nead to change my wrist but I cant find any good :/
Thanks again for this guide

Im glad you like it Lasse! :)
I'll try and add some of the more common abbreviations at the beggining.
It's all so second nature to me so i barely remember using them :)
Your character looks very good!
Too bad the armory doesnt take into account for talents on the char sheet.
But you should be looking at about 25-30% dodge+parry+block at that level.
If you have someone that can boost you until you get ironfoe.. Sure why shouldnt you go for it?
But you're most probably going to switch it when you get to northrend.
I'd say use the petrified lichen guard until you find a new shield in northrend with lots of stam/defense.
Even though it's probably one of the best AoE shields the amount of survivability you lose is not worth it.
Same goes for the Flurry Axe if you decide to keep it switch it for a new weapon when you get to northrend.
Dont worry about the wrist it'll come with time. Having the top notch gear is not the most important thing it simply makes it easier.

I've pretty much doubled the size of the abbreviations list now :)
Also sorted them alphabeticaly :)
I also added a small segment in the techniques section on how to deal with ranged mobs.

good work svirve, coming along real nice now :) - inclined to just level up another prot pallie for fun :D
@ LasseG, just to warn you that Ironfoe has a very low DR (1% according to wowhead -
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=11684
), so unless you just want to go to BRD for ach/fun i wouldn't be inclined to grind it out, you'll likely replace it fairly soon anyhow.
On the other hand it is
the only
wep which allows you to "talk" in actual words to player of the opossite faction and it is really rare too, if you're like a magpie and like shiny things... oh and keep the petrified Lichen guard anyway for when you're grinding mobs and could use the damage>avidance/mitigation (which a better sheild could provide) or if you are taking people through lower level instances.

Thx for the tips guys!
Installing the wrath of the lich king now. Hopefully I´ll find another weapon soon then.
GJ Swirve with the abbreviations list ! It was really helpful for me.

Could you add
Frost Oil
and
Dragonbreath Chilli
to the consumables section?
The proc-rate is low, but it helps. The chilli doesn't stack with food buffs like Well Fed.

Im not really sure to be honest.
It does help but it does nothing that is special to you as an AoE grinder.
The consumables section is kinda on hold at the moment as well.
Seeing as the whole gear post is getting way too long.
With coding I broke the 15 000 character limit about 2 weeks ago.
I need to figure out wether I should be expanding it to a 2 post section. Or removing the long version of the stat explanation.
Or if Im going to do something else Im not entirely sure yet. Changes will happen in the week to come though.
I will keep those two in mind for the revamp though!
Thanks for the help!

Cloak of Fire
is realatively cheap from the AH and can give you that edge.
