Personally I think everyone should better their communication, especially in an informal environment, not only for self respect but to the respect of the other people reading it.
Oh, there's always a clarity cost to communication. Every generation has pedants that claim that communication is being defiled (anything from the pronunciation of wrath to losing the second person singular), but a decline in fluency of transmission is always associated with an increase in the ability to decode. At least, that's the majority view in linguistics, as far as I'm aware.
I'm 19, it's legal.
Oh cool, I'll get the limbs, you work on the torso?
Best of luck with classes by the way :o

Ugh, I dunno why, but it PISSES ME OFF MORE THAN ANYTHING when people say "your" instead of "you're" or simply "You are"
SPEAK SOME BLOODY ENGLISH WILL YE?
This exact debate happens in our trade channel on Stormscale literally almost everyday. I 100% agree. However, we have a few people that debate that it's the internet and that it's irrelevant and not necessary that we should all be smart enough to understand the connotation of their words, etc etc. My counterargument is that I know for a fact I myself had issues remembering to use the proper form in the past but then finally learned the differences and started using them daily as appropriate, now I can't really seem to mess it up on accident, it's natural.
I honestly feel that most people who don't use them correctly just don't know or understand the differences.
Furthermore, lets say they do know, what sense does it make to completely alter your way of communicating just because you're in an informal environment? Personally I think everyone should better their communication, especially in an informal environment, not only for self respect but to the respect of the other people reading it.
But, then again, respect for oneself or others is often lacking in society, online or not.
I'm not even a grammar nazi or anything like that, I mean I myself sometimes use "u" instead of "you" (rarely) but for some reason it really ticks me off when people say "Your" instead of "You're" or "you are".
Maybe because unlike u, your is an actual word that means something else entirely, or maybe because its just a pet peeve for me. either way, that's the one grammar mistake that always pisses me off. And english is not even my main language.

I actually don't mind, to a point, when people replace "thank you" with "thx" or "you" with "u" etc, in a gaming environment. Short hand to me is a bit different then blatantly using the wrong word in a sentence. I have had people argue that 'your' is shorter than 'you're' so they're just not wasting their time... but unless someone is extremely slow at typing and the extra 3 presses of their keyboard is taking an entire extra second or two, I don't believe their explanation.
Anyhow, what are we going to be able to do about it? Nothing; we'll just deal with it.

I think that there is a great deal of difference between an intentional abbreviation, and an inability to use the correct word in the first place. I think anyone who knows which version of your/you're, they're/their/there and to/too/two to use would refuse to use a different one as an "abbreviation" because they know it just makes you look ignorant of the correct usage. However, no one sees someone write "TY" or "grtz" and thinks "Wow, they really think that's how you spell 'thank you' and 'congratulations'."
I was laughing before at some posts I was reading where one person was berating another for being too lazy to learn things for themselves about the game, but were using the incorrect versions of "to" and "you're" throughout all of their posts. I'm sure that the person in question has been dealing with English longer than the person they were speaking to has been dealing with WoW. Irony, thy name is internet.

Don't misunderstand though EluraE, there are definitely exceptions... such as the one you mention. However, that particular example isn't the one I encounter often, it's usually just people in game who can't be bothered with communication skills because in-game isn't school, work or, as I hear often, "a job application."
I can usually tell when English isn't someone's first language. Not always, but usually. I usually look at those people as pretty damn awesome. I can't speak, or type, a second language (more than a couple of words) so anyone who can and it is at least readable and I can understand it, gets an A in my book. ;)(##RESPBREAK##)12##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##

Still though, why is it important to spell things right, or use the right grammar in a game? It takes up time in which I could be slaying undead. Unless I guess in a RP situation? Also, does this happen for anyone else, typing in WoW is a lot slower for me, like it doesn't react when I click buttons?
I don't know why I'm asking, I usually always use good grammar or "dighosdipdg" when I game. Never anything inbetween.
I'm pretty sure WoW registers keys when they're released and not pushed down.

The "what is 6/2(1+3)" posts on Facebook are getting annoying. It seems like there is a new one every week.

Can you explain people saying 'double-you tee eff' (i.e. WTF) instead of the much shorter original though?

Because people are strange like that.
