On the other hand, I've had people I don't know, and people I've not been in any kind of relationship with do really really nice things for me in MMORPGs before. I've seen some really generous people there.

Oh, I agree- but I'd rather politely refuse their help then take something from someone because I am a girl, if I can't tell what they're about. And believe me, there are guys who you can give zero encouragement to, but if you're a female and politely neutral rather than telling them to take a hike, they get very persistent.

As a female gamer, I tend to take a really firm stance on not accepting gold, or free stuff from guys I play with. It may or may not be that I get offered things because I'm a girl, but if it is I would think it was taking advantage of them to accept. When I've gotten to be friends with someone, and we've established an "I do for you, you do for me," relationship, then I'm ok with accepting a piece of transmog here or mats there because I know I'll reciprocate. But I wouldn't want to be treated differently because of gender, and if you accept gifts that people give you because they want to curry your favor as a female, you encourage them.
I saw a message in general chat in SWTOR once that literally read
"Can someone give me money for my speeder? Also, I'm a girl IRL."
EDIT: I SAW a message- lol
Reply girl mentality. *pukes*

You could feign insanity.

I tend to just start sharing anecdotes about my boyfriend- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't :/
What's really funny is that with my newest transmog, there are like 4 guys on my server that repeatedly /whistle at my character when she runs by in SW. I'm going to start whispering them, "Hi there, my name is Steve. What's yours?"

I treat both genders equally.
However I will say that our guild for whatever reason from time-to-time seems to be less strict on the performance of our female guildies than their male counterparts.

This pretty much bothers me too.
Like if I'm running along in a game and I see someone that needs help and I'm all like "hey you need a hand", and then the character is all like "I don't know if my boyfriend would like that". Sometimes it isn't that obvious, but when girls use the fact they have a boyfriend as a shield, I feel like I'm being seen as some kind of male that needs to be protected against, without that person finding anything out about me first.
This is pretty rare, though, as I usually travel around games with my wife.

But when someone happens to hear you speak in a pug in vent, then comes to your vent every day afterwards to talk to you and keeps trying to send you things and whispers you constantly, and starts trying to discourage you from dating websites, it's not the same thing. When the direction the conversation with a guildie takes is how much they work out, and do you want to trade facebook info so they can see pics, and how their last relationship sucked so much and why can't they just meet a nice girl, etc., you're crossing into the territory where it's appropriate. If they're just being friendly, then it won't phase them and we're good. If not, then I headed it off. I don't use it unless the person is much more than just friendly or helpful- definitely not every time someone wants to group up with me to kill a mob or give me a mage port or something.
I have no problem being friendly and talkative, and making friends online. I have a LOT of guys who I talk to online all the time that are my friends. But you can tell when someone is being more than just friendly.
