The band at Laihendi's school is actually what it's best known for.
The school's marching band, the "Golden Regiment," has received numerous awards and accolades. The group consistently receives superior ratings at marching events and has received straight superior ratings at its district marching festivals for the past 11 years. In November 2000, the Golden Regiment marched in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York and was the featured band performing live on NBC's "Today Show". In 2008, the "Golden Regiment" has progressed towards Florida State Championship for the first time in history, claiming 4th place trophy in 5A category on November 22nd. In 2009 the Buchholz Wind Symphony is set to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City as part the 2009 New York Wind Band Festival.
The Wind Symphony (the principal concert ensemble) performed at the College Band Directors National Association and National Band Association Southern Regional Conference in Atlanta, Georgia in February 2002. In December 2002, they were honored to perform at the Midwest Clinic, an International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago, Illinois. In 2006, the Wind Symphony was invited to the Grand National Adjudicators Invitational in Chattanooga, TN--The Wind Symphony was awarded Superior Scores from all adjudicators as well as the First Place "Honor Band" Award. The French Horns and the entire Woodwind Section were awarded "Outstanding Sections." Two students received "Outstanding Soloist" Awards. This was all accomplished under the direction of Paula Thornton and Vicki Nolan. The band is now under the direction of Alex Kaminsky.

I honestly don't think this is going anywhere. MyTie, you say you like sophisticated, mature debates. I think this is heading in the opposite direction. I mean really, you're making jokes with GoGoGodzilla about the opposite side, are you my age(12)? I think this will end best if you drop it, because, at least in my experience, debates where one side is making fun of the other in ANY way end up with a flame war, which is essentially what this has become. Because if one side thinks the other doesn't respect them, they're going to dig their heels in and stand their ground. The way to debate best is to respectfully consider the other side's argument and a make grown up response, respectfully. Politics are especially hard to do this with, but still. I think you know this, both of you. Though I'm sure this will be lost on everyone, so I'm not sure why I even bother. Whatever. I could care less.
I called Laihendi an Idiot a few pages back, then promptly apologized. I have seen no other flames in this debate. I definately disagree with Laihendi, but I do my best not to flame.
I think what you mean is that openly discussing something that people disagree on is 'flaming'. You're wrong.
See how I did that. That isn't a flame. That is me very adamantly disagreeing with you. It might sting a little, but I didn't call you any names or insult you.
We will probably continue this debate, flame free. Like it or not, deal with it.

Actually MyTie is like 25. And sarcastic! Or is it the other way around...
I realize this; but I wouldn't have guessed it from the jokes he was making.
To MyTie: I play piano, and was introduced to it by my parents. I also play trumpet, at which I am equally skilled, and it was introduced to me through school. I think that kids are more likely to become interested in music if they have an option to be a part of a school program, but I don't think that, by any means, it is the only way.
She learned the piano on her own before going to any form of school. Her grandma taught her. She also sings weekly in church. She has the option to go to public school classes if she would like for music. They are probably right now learning the scales... you know "Every Good Boy Does Fine"... But I don't think she would get anything out of that.

Laihendi's middle school band/orchestra also got invited to play in NYC/DC when he was in eighth grade.
The school's instrumental music program is notable for being invited to New York City and Washington, D.C. for the last week of the 2005-2006 academic school year to perform. The band and orchestra were also invited to perform in a national adjudicator's invitational in Charleston the end of the 2006-2007 school year (in which they got a "Superior" rating). All of this was done under the direction of David N. Olsen, and it was under his direction that the program grew to be widely considered the most talented middle school program in the state.
Neither of those programs would exist without public education.

Probably not identical... but your arguement is that they COULDN'T exist without it. This is where you are wrong. Government is not required for kids to learn instruments... kids and instruments are.

At any point in this thread have I called for an abolition of public education?
Laihendi is pointing out the great things that are made possible by public education. And explaining why for every school Laihendi has been to, they'd have to be pretty dumb to cut the music program.
