The more I hear about your family Skreeran, the more I'm starting to think they are idiots. The problem isn't that they're idiots.
They (some of them, at least), are genuinely smart people.
The problem is not that they're dumb. The problem is that my parents genuinely believe this book--the most important book every written, they believe--is
literally
true in its every word, and that the task they were put on Earth to do is to teach this book and its truth to their children. To them, the literal truth of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus is the most important thing they can teach, and so Science, Math, History, and everything have to be integrated with the Bible.
My mom has said that her greatest regret is putting me in public school. I think it's the thing I'm most glad for.
That's, pardon, retarded. The more I hear about other Christian churches the more I realize how glad I am that I'm a Mormon. One of our commandments is to get as much education as possible (such as math, physics, English, etc).

If I may, how old are they? I'm sure you've mentioned it before, but if they're any older than 10 years old, that seems like a really bad question and certainly enhances the idea that that sort of education is bad for them.
I didn't catch which one actually asked the question.
Considering how deeply religious Benjamin Franklin was, while simultaneously being highly intelligent in his religious views, I find that highly inaccurate and tbh a bit disturbing. (Yes, he's a bit of an idol of mine).Thomas Jefferson is mine... :P

Your
religion promotes secular education (which I can respect), but they honestly believe that their beliefs that the world is 6000 years old and that God made Man from the dust of the Earth and Woman from Man's rib are true. And from a religious standpoint, who can say that their beliefs are any less valid than mainstream Judaism, Islam, or Scientology?
I'm not using my own family's circumstances as an attack on religion (I'm not
that
agenda driven), but it really makes it tricky. From my parent's standpoint, they're doing what's best for their children, and if they truly believe that, how can anyone convince them that it's not?

Because we teach Gospel stuff too (seminary, weekly church, etc) while getting secular education, which I see as the way to go.

The problem is not just that they believe wrong things. Lots of people believe wrong things. It's that their belief is so strong that the things they believe overrule observable facts about the universe. They believe to the point of delusion. They honestly truly believe that the Earth is nearly 6000 years old and that their duty as parents is to instruct their children in the Word. You apparently have been taught that your belief can be reconciled with a 13.7 billion year old universe. They don't believe that.
How would you convince them otherwise?

I honestly don't know.
Also, did I tell you that I dreamed that I went to your house, and your dad told me not to talk with you because you were "the enemy"?
That's what happens when I go to sleep at four after listening to weird music. And yes, that really did happen, about a day ago.

Have you see
my
dad
? :P
But yeah...
Here's the problem with pure belief:
Imagine for a moment Joseph Smith had explicitly said "Evolution is a lie," or something like that, and you'd been taught that that was truth by your parents. If you believed strong enough, there would be no evidence that I could present you with that made you think that your beliefs were wrong, even though as you really know, evolution is a fact.
That's how my parents are. Since they base their "truths" on belief, rather than observable evidence (they claim to have evidence, of course, but it's all confirmation bias), there's nothing I can show them to make them believe otherwise. As far as they're concerned, they're doing what's best for their children, and there's nothing I can do to make them see differently. I cannot change their minds on scientific terms, and on religious terms, who can say that they're wrong?
Blind belief is dangerous.

I've always had a problem with blind belief, which is why I question everything. That's also why my faith grows. /shrug
Have you see my dad? :P
Yeah, I saw those pictures before. I think we were doing a game of poker when he said that =P
