You may or may not be thrilled to know that I am a Usonian that can tell the difference between an Australian accent and a South African accent. Although, I'm honestly confused why people think they sound alike.
One has more Dutch in it
.
Australia?

South Africa? It was founded by Dutch settlers :P

I sometimes confuse a South African accent with a New Zealand accent actually. And no, I'm not relieved; I've never heard that stereotype.

Gotcha!
Nah, I was just kidding, I do know that much history :p And there might be a reason that Afrikaans sounds alot like dutch :p

Heh, it's probably only something that really comes up in the States, where too many of us are completely ignorant of other aspects of the English language.
I'm pretty good at discerning accents though...

Imo, it's kinda odd that Africans would be white. I was shocked when I first heard of it.

I can't tell American from Canadian. Also, while I can certainly recognise many different American accents, I couldn't tell you which came from where. Except for a good ol' Suthin Drawl.

Same. I can tell the difference between alot of American accents, but i can't tell if it's from Oregon or South Dakota.

The only difference between an American and Canadian accent is that one is polite and one is jerkish lol.

Everyone has an accent. But when everyone else around you has the same one as you, it seems like you don't.

I wouldn't quite agree, there are some people who speak with absolutely neutral voices(i had a teacher in the eighth grade who sounded like a robot, really). Though there might be some indistinguishable accent hidden deep down there somewhere.

How did she pronounce "can't"? Did it rhyme with "ant" or "carnt"? Yes, I know carnt isn't a real word.
I finally watched Scream earlier. :P Never seen it.

Now, watch the other 2 and you'll be prepared for the fourth one.

I heard that the fourth is awesome. But
Rogue
Sookie Stackhouse
Anna Paquin gets killed off quite early, apparently. :(

Did you Scream?
@Donny: Think of the automated voice on say, an airplane, remove all trace of emotion from that voice. And there you have it. Can't remember exactly how she pronounced words and my memory may be screwing with me, but i believe she had this freaky brittish accent. (Which is odd, considering well... I live in Sweden)

Even crazy automated voices still have at least a slight accent. I know CityRail in NSW create messages using several hundred words which were obviously recorded by a human being. Saying each word singularly and then grafting them together will remove most traces of an accent, however there is definitely still an Australian accent present.
And yeah, pronunciation of can't is probably the biggest indicator of someone's accent, no matter how slight it is.
