Saddest song ever written?
Chicken Wire
IMO
Eleanor Rigby
if you prefer oldies.

Because usually arguments don't involve
ad hominem
statements. And when the whole of the argument is such a statement, it really isn't an argument.
Hmm? I simply asked you to read my mind. Go on, I'm sure you can see the argument I would make. ;)

Ummm...
Fayne is an accurate representation of American high-schoolers, therefore Hyperspacerebel is wrong?
The blog Hyperspacerebel linked was by a teacher and therefore biased.
I think, therefore HSR is wrong.
All of the above.

I honestly can't think of any other arguments against my position.
Americans are dumb.
We have set very low standards for ourselves, and I don't think it's fixable at this point.

Iwonder how many Americans can recite the Pledge of Allegiance or sing the Star Spangled Banner.

Every single one of them can perform the former. Most can perform the latter, aside from the fact that it's actually a technically difficult song if solo.
Hyperspace: People are stupid. Not Americans. Big difference there. And taking what looks like mainly cases out of specific regions and then saying "oh, well, that must apply to everyone" is a fallacy.

I can play the Star Spangled Banner on my instrument!

Well, it's true. I was deing Algebra 2 years before I got into the Algebra program in the USA... and here it was a big deal because I was "advanced".
When I went to Sweden in the 8th grade, I basically didn't do math because of my advancement. I spent my time in mathematics calculating the square roots of 5 and 2 by hand.
/shrug. Every country is going to be different in the amount of time it takes to teach material. Math isn't the only subject, nor is it the most important, nor does it matter the difference in time.
Besides, in other countries, there's a certain point where you drop the dead wood away. That happens in Europe before gymnasium. That happens here before college. I would suspect that where you come from, it happens earlier. The majority of people in the Americas don't need to be advanced enough to be beginning calculus in high school.
It's that whole broad based curriculum, and it frustrates me that it is the case, but there it is.
That said... it should be required that students take two years of civics and two years of philosophy in high school. I would add to the intensity of the curriculum, not subtract from it.

I think he's trying to say we should end this argument. An alternative interpretation could be that "Recycle Bin is dead" but that's unlikely considering we're posting.
Any other views?
