I love lvl 80 n00bs.
I'm currently leveling a BM Hunter and I go over spec (toon/pet) with a finely tuned comb. Just because you're Wolf kills target A faster then my bear doesn't mean that I cant kill 10 mobs AoE'ing them to death while you're working on mob #4.
You want to talk about fast kills? My Cunning pet will kill a single target, non-elite mob quicker then I can get my Arcane Arrow to come off it's cool down. But it's squishier then hell and cant hold agro.
Plus, if you really want to go into detail all you need to do is pop the mob with SS or a quick AoV/Volley and sit back Mending Pet. There, no agro issue.
Didn't have time to write up my version of a BM guide (which will suck and be alot of shameless bragging) yet but plan to soon.
If you dont think I know what I'm talking about with BM speccing try reading a few of my replies.
Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go lvl some.

Thank you for the great guide. I just started a Dwarf Hunter, and this offered some great answers to the questions I had. I do have one more question though, and this is a bit of a follow-up to the debate between Helvorst, Cheader, and wOwCrUsHeR:
I'm not someone who does AoE very often; I just prefer going single target. If I'm not planning on AoE grinding with my hunter, is a tenacity pet still the best choice? I'll probably just try out both a bear and a wolf and see which one is a better fit, but I also wanted some advice from experienced hunters.
Also, just a note: in the first sentence of the section "How many mobs can I take at a time?" there's a reference to gorillas being the recommended pet for leveling. I'm assuming this is left over from before all tenacity pets got thunderstomp, but considering gorillas aren't even a recommended pet anymore, you may want to adjust that part.

Thank you for the advice Helvorst, I'll try out a wolf the next time I'm playing my hunter. One last question: would you recommend the same BM talent build if you aren't going with a tenacity pet? A lot of the talents seem focused on boosting the pet's survivability, and that's still important with a wolf, but are some of those talents pointless if I'm going single target?

Oh, no, I meant my talent build, not the pet's. A lot of the BM talents you recommend are clearly designed to help a tenacity pet tank.

Well...you could always go SV if it's DPS you want. But for BM Survivability = DPS. Pretty much the longer your pet can stay alive the more damage she can do.
If you want to Single Target drop mobs (although AoEing IS awesome) then I'd suggest SV. BIG numbers right away, you hardly need the argo the pet will cause as you'd likely drop the mob before it reaches you (much like a Mage does)

This has been my experience as a leveling hunter, blood elf BM hunter at 32 at the moment:
With a ferocity or cunning pet, if I get another mob than the one my pet is fighting, chances are pretty good the new mob will come my way. If I get two or more mobs other than the one my pet is fighting, chances are 100% one or more is going to try to stomp me. I can feint out, and likely some of those mobs will come back my way when I stand back up. Practically every time I've died, it was because my pet could not hold all that aggro.
With my tenacity pet, the ol' trusty bear I picked up in Ashenvale, it can hold onto two, three, four, even five mobs, and rarely do I worry about my bear losing the aggro. If it does, a quick feint, the bear gets the mobs back, and I just toss an occasional mend pet its way. I love my bear. From now on, out in the wilds of Azeroth, he'll continue to be my leveling companion.
If I wanted to get up close and personal with more than one mob, I'd go back to my warrior or druid. Otherwise, it seems that playing a hunter that way is like leveling a priest by letting him whack at mobs with his staff (yes, I've seen that!). Rarely have I worried about having a mob touch me, other than when one will come up behind my back. Once I get this guy up to endgame, maybe I'll reroll another hunter to try leveling some other spec besides BM. But it's working for me, along with my bear, just imho.
