How do you train your pets? I know there used to be an ability that showed up in your spellbook for it, but I dont see it anymore... All the pet trainer says to me is dialog, not actual training...

Just a little note:
Pet's gain talent points around every four levels or so. I had to look high and low for this so I think it would make a reasonable, albeit small, addition to that FAQ up der.

Thelvlaster said: Plus I wont be dipping into Marks until after I get Beast Mastery so no Gfft till about 70 or 71.
Helvorst: I take it that you weren't too fond of the idea. Would you recommend going more hybrid at first? I think you would suggest going for this build:
http://ptr.wowhead.com/?talent=cV0GzxxMZ0eMb
, then going for
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#cV0GzgxRfu0est0eVb0h
to anyone. (I'm assuming they just want to level, and don't have any strong ideas one way or another - my situation, btw.) Am I reading too much into what you were saying?
I know that I and another hunter would like to know if it is better to stay purely in BM until you get 51 points for the extra 4 pet talent points you get or put 15 or so points in Marksmanship at the beginning and possibly respeccing at level 60. I imagine that may be a fairly common question. It's relatively easy to find suggested level 80 builds including ones supposedly for leveling (although not at the moment, so much), but it's not so easy to find suggestions of how do you spend points on talents before you have them all.
In your article, you might consider adding a little intro to the section on shot rotations and you might mention that it applies to relatively high-level hunters (BM tree, at least) or what level you would be at when you would start worrying about things like that. You seem to assume that the reader would know why they rotate shots and actually have the shots to rotate. Furthermore, at the moment, my "shot rotation" is Serpent Sting -> Arcane Shot ->run forward -> Raptor Strike -> Mongoose Bite ->Disengage -> Arcane Shot ->run forward -> Mongoose Bite -> Raptor Strike -> Disengage. I realize that you and many others wouldn't recommend doing this, but why wouldn't you use Mongoose Bite and Raptor strike while waiting for the Arcane Shot cooldown to expire? I could see throwing in Aimed Shot if the mob can heal (or be healed), but it uses a lot of mana and does very little damage and there isn't anything else to use. If I'm right, it probably makes the choice of melee weapons more important than you indicated, I think, also. I can't prove it, but I also suspect that there is an advantage to doing the opposite of what the mob wants to do.

I shouldn't have mentioned Aimed Shot at all since it isn't available for BM hunters. I got confused by the fact that the additional ranks (above 1) are listed under the hunter spells. But since I did, would you please explain what it does? The description for rank 2 says: "An aimed shot that increases ranged damage by 35 and reduces healing done to that target by 50%. Lasts 10 sec." Is that 35 damage per ranged hit for 10 seconds or is that just 35 damage one time? The buff description makes it sound like the 10 seconds is only for the health debuff. Since Mongoose Bite says: "Attack the enemy for damage" for rank 2 (about 100 in my case, assuming AP is really MAP), you can see why I would think that Mongoose Bite would do more damage, particularly if the 35 damage only applies once. Aimed shot takes 3 times more mana than Mongoose Bite, too. I noticed that Aimed Shot seems to get much more potent at higher levels, though.
As far as why would I walk up and melee, one reason is that I do so little damage while ranged while Serpent Sting and Arcane Shot are on cooldown. By my calculations, my raw ranged DPS is 46 while my melee is 56, despite the fact that my axes are several levels lower than my gun at the moment. Those numbers seem reasonable because my melee attack power is higher than my ranged, and by dual equipping I get the equivalent of an extra half weapon when I melee. That matches the impression I get in the actual battles. The other reason is simply to get the Mongoose Bite and Raptor Strike in. Together, they do as much additional damage as I could do in 3 seconds otherwise. (There is a mana cost as Deathlovesme pointed out, though.) Of course, I wouldn't recommend this to a higher level player (especially not marksman) because they have a variety of high DPS ranged shots to use, but I only have a couple and they have long cooldowns. If I had Steady Shot, I certainly would use it, but since I don't, I have to make do with what I have.
How long has it been since you have played a 20ish or 30ish hunter or lower? It seems to me that as you reach higher levels, ranged fighting probably becomes much more important, but at low levels you don't have the same tools available to you. (Hunters actually start off with a melee attack spell, not a ranged one!) I don't doubt that your statement "Meleeing is inferior to ranged dps for hunters fyi" is true for higher levels, but it's not so clear that its true for lower levels.
Thanks very much for your guide and reply.

No, not definitely.
When starting out you want to get a bear pet as soon as you can. It's the #1 "must have". The reason why is the bear starts out with an AoE attack. Others wont get one till lvl 40 and then you have to spec the pet to Thunderstomp.
Doing this will reduce the time you spend on quests. there are more "Kill X amount of Y to gather Z" then I care to count and having a pet which can hold the agro of multiple mobs will be the best that you can do.
But dont count out the DPS'ers. The second pet you "must have" is a wolf for instance runs. The boost to your DPS is incredible especially at lowbie levels when you dont have alot of access to AP buffs.
When leveling you want to focus on BM for pet survivability. The more DPS it can deal and more damage it can take the longer you'll be out there grinding up to the point where you wont need BM anymore (/sniff)
there are "Must have" and "dont bother with" talents for leveling as BM and if I have enough time at lunch I'll make a post about it.
