What makes Frost so survivable and workable in soling, levelling, and in pvp, and lagging behind on raids, would be very OP if you were to make it on par with fire on raids. The mechanics would have to change, and I really don't want to see that happen to frost, and I don't think they would rework it to make them all the same for all categories. I am really looking forward to (ie: hoping they implement) dual specs so I can use frost most of the time, and have my raid spec.

Blizz when they retooled the trees made it so all the trees were raid viable.
Frost does a little less damage, adds some mana regen for the raid (more mana more overall dps), and adds winter chill for 10% extra crit for spells.Well here's the problem with that. Blizz screwed up badly with frost, it's running somewhere around 400 dps behind ffb which is unacceptable from a raiding standpoint, 400dps is not +/-5% especially when you can get a hunter to do the same job or a ret pally(who are on par or 10-30% higher). 250 dps might be tolerable. But 400 isn't especailly when you're dealing with hard enrage timers and laggy servers. :)

yes, i do understand ice's dps is much lower than frostfire, but as long as i'm not dead last in dps meters among the dps classes and my pug raids arent having enrage timer problems, i will continue raiding as frost
however, if a highend raiding guild that has 3 drakes on farm requires me to go frostfire, i will oblige without any second thoughts
So by your logic a healer with a non-optimal spec is fine as long as only some percentage of the raid dies but doesn't completely wipe.
At the moment I am a FFB spec mage. If, after the patch, arcane proves to deliver the most DPS I'll be an arcane mage as soon it out performs FFB with my gear.
I was in Naxx last night. I don't remember at this moment which boss, but I do remember that we wiped with him at 2%. It was an ugly try, various people made mistakes. We ran back got our act together and downed him easily on the next try. But I know how it would have felt if that 2% had been left because I was too self centered to maximize my DPS. In a raid 9 or 24 other people depend on me to do my job. Except for fights which require me to decurse (or something similar) my job is to deliver the maximum possible damage without pulling aggro. If we hit an enrage timer because I didn't do that the, wipe is my fault. Plain and simple. Your statement about being willing to change for a "highend raiding guild" demonstrates that you know this.
What you are really saying is that as long as you have to pug, or run with a guild you consider unworthy, you don't consider yourself obligated to do your best. You might want to consider why any guild would want someone with that attitude.

What you are really saying is that as long as you have to pug, or run with a guild you consider unworthy, you don't consider yourself obligated to do your best. You might want to consider why any guild would want someone with that attitude.
most likely in a pug or non serious raiding guild, you have many players who have a lackadaisical atitude towards raiding and do not see the need or have the urge to maximize their output on encounters. why should i bust my ass off just so they can be carried by me?
I could open the pandora's box of personal pride in how one plays their class, but I suspect you want a more tangible answer. Its really pretty simple. While some of the folks in that PuG may well be lazy screw offs, some may well be from the very guilds you think are worthy. Busting your ass and demonstrating a good attitude and a commitment to your best is the single best way to get an invite to that guild you think worth while. You really never know when someone who is in the position to make that offer is in your PuG. Also when you apply to that guild you seek, you never know if someone on the invite committee, pugged with you on an alt in the past.
I have a open invite to one of the top ten guilds on my server simply because I happened to PuG with their GM when I and he were leveling to 80. We run instances once and a while when he is leveling an alt and needs a 5th. We occasionally pull in one of their members if we are short as well. At the moment, I'm busy building a guild but its a nice connection to have should things go sour. I did not get the offer because I'm the be all and end all of DPS. Rather my attitude and commitment to deliver my best caught his attention.
You build your reputation with the player community one PuG at a time. Eventually it makes a difference.

There is always room for a frost mage in a raid, as long as he can play the spec well.
One of the top dps in my guild happens to be a frost mage >.> the only reason why is because he knows how to play his frost mage very well and also happens to be one of the guilds class leaders for mage. I used to be full frost like he did but I've recently switched to frost fire as I really prefer the DPS I'm able to produce for heroics and 10/25 Naxx and VoA.
Also it brings back alot of TBC memories before i switched to arcane as i loved being specced fire :)
I really don't see why this thread was made in all honesty though, my guild and some other guilds I know have frost mages who raid alot.
also just a question about your advice mr hardmangg:
my advice on trying to raid as frost:
1) join a raid that already has some players who dont know how to optimize their dps output (either because of rotation or gear)
The first part of your advice seems silly. To me it seems like you're telling those frost mages who wish to raid to join a group thats either:
never raided that place before
doesnt know how to keep a good casting rotation
I dont know who you've been pugging with but playing
at least 79 levels
of the game you must some how know some good casting rotation for your spec or at least have the common sense to read about your class before deciding to raid
Also it says to me that you're only top because the only reason you seem so proud of yourself is because your raiding with people who dont know how to optimize their class dps :S
I'm expecting quite abit of flame back but I'm only stating on i'm thinking right now based on what I've read so far
