What's all this nonsense about not hitting the defense cap?

I don't see any such nonsense.
Also, most of us make it to Def-cap without having to DW.

Dual wield. Boo.
Anyways, you'll notice that a lot of entry-level tanking blues have a large amount of +Defense (the crafted Daunting pieces in particular). The problem is that as you begin to upgrade to epics, your +Defense will start taking a nose dive (until a certain point, at which it should stabilize and improve) - items like T7/T7.5 add more TPS/Stam/raw avoidance and have less +Defense.
Daunting Handguards
vs.
Heroes' Scourgeborne Handguards
Daunting Legplates
vs.
Heroes' Scourgeborne Legguards
The new Sigil and Runeforge options will significantly alleviate this problem.

I just want to say, as a DK tank, the "impossible" aspect of hitting crit immune is far fetched. And as for epic gear being worse. The truth is, you gotta balance your epics. Yes you will probably have to gem and enchant most of your slots for +def. But then again, I'd rather have full epics thats all gemed and enchanted for +def than have all blues that arn't.
Just my two cents. Once you get the trinket from HoL heroics become easy bake cakes. Farm heroics and eventually get in on Naxx, get the epic + def trinket in there and stack it with the blue one and guess what? You got +150 def in just your trinkets. Now add in +25 def on weapons from the next patch and you got +175. Every piece of epic gear I seen gives about +30 def too... Just saying, its not EASY to get crit immune, but it aint impossible. And if you DW... more power to your healer, because if he can keep you alive, he's good.

True, but I mean I've had no problems keep crit immune. It seems to be a major issue with keeping crit immune is trying to jump into T7 before you epic the simpler slots (bracers, belt, boots, jewelry.) Im aiming for the t7 gear now. And plan on throwing two +16 def gems on my emblem gear belt to push my Def up high enough to swap my tunic out for t7. I'm away doing this will probably mean Im going to gem my new t7 tunic in +def / str.stam.w.e gems, But I mean in the long run its way more worth it.

the problem is not to get crit immune, its when you start to upgrade to epic quality gear you lose def, and therefore have to keep blue over epics, until you get the defense somewhere else.

Considering with the new runeforge enchant we get +25 def I don't think we need to be worried about this anymore anyway.

You have 20k hp, and horrible avoidance ?
Have fun in Naxx.

Defense =/= Defense rating
It takes about 5 defense rating to get 1 defense, you need +140 defense so you need 700 defense rating.
The poster I quoted doesn't know what I'm talking about, additionally he makes jokes about dual wield when DW tanks are superior to 2-hders, l2runestrike.

Heh. Good for you. Too bad Patchwerk would instagib you :)
Me myself, I got full T7 (10man) + alot of other epics, pretty much full epic. I have defense-enchants on exactly every spot I can. I am a blacksmith, otherwise I would not be defcapped. I have all slots except 3 (for meta) gemmed for +16 def. I have exactly 540 defense :)
Right now defense is clearly an issue for DK's, and I'm very glad it will be fixed in the patch.
Here's my armory, don't mind the spec, PVP-spec atm, also the BS gemslots on hands/wrist doesn't show.

Smiley, you are the man. See what he did there? He didn't simply make unfounded statements or idiotic rantings. Instead, he stated info AND backed it up with (correct) math. Keep it up man.
To the OP: I haven't been tanking lately but I'm defense capped in my tanking gear and the majority of that is BS gear I crafted. With the upcoming changes to Frost Presence, assuming no further tweaks and the other changes, I do not think any DKs will have a problem tanking. The changes in focus from straight defense on the entry-level gear to avoidance on T7 is nothing new. Look at the focus on older gear from early gear with loads of +hit and such to later gear not having as much. It's simply assumed by the time you're hitting these areas you'll have other gear that'll pick up where the T7 drops. For example: Repelling Charge and Signet of the Impregnable Fortress add +defense so you don't have to worry about losing 20-40 defense on your T7 pants etc.

Well, fully buffed and with blade barrier up I have about 60% total avoidance, more or equal to a bear at the same gearlevel. Our MT in the guild, a warrior, have about the same avoidance. We have around the same gear, I got 2 more tier pieces, and I have about 2k more HP and about the same armor. Post-patch I will have about 4k+ more hp (due to the fact I can gem for stamina + Gargoyle rune) and I would say 2-3k more armor, if not even more.
You are of course forgetting about our completely awesome mitigation skills such as AMS, IBF, Unbreakable Armor and Lichborne, all four who easily can save your life. With UB and Lichborne up, it's rare something ever hits me. About 15 seconds of complete invincibility is pretty sweet. Then right after you can pop IBF, for 50% (about 35% post-patch) extra damage reduction.
DK-tanks are great right now, especially against magic-based bosses (KT, Sapph, Malygos) seeing as we have 5% spelldmg reduction, AMS _and_ acclimation (if frost, which I tank as).
Post-patch I think we will be even more awesome, and our only flaw - the defcap - will be adressed. Don't underestimate DKs!
edit: Unholy/blood tanks of course work differently, I have however only tanked as frost as I find it great for AOE-tanking (heroics) and also very versatile in a raiding-enviroment (good melee-mitigation as well as acclimation for magic-based bosses).
