How could a calendar possibly
end
? "Calendar" is not a finite resource any more than seconds on the dial of a watch is.
This sounds like a stupid idiot urban legend either invented to fool/scare stupid people, or by some dumbass who didn't understand what he was told/read.
Wait, your calendar doesn't end on January 31 of each year, or if it's one of those sixteen month jobs on April 30? It's really simple, the Mayans developed a calendar system, they extrapolated all the dates out until December 21, 2012. That is the last day on the calendar they created. Now I agree it's foolish to ascribe any sort of meaning to that other than "that's where they decided to stop" but that is where the calendar they created ends.
And to the poster who said it's a conspiracy, well, that's not really the right word. Some new age guy thought it up and many people bought it, it's not a nefarious scheme. And I'd disagree that it meant to the mayans a rebirth of thought, it could have been anything as simple to them as the end of a century means to us, it's not really clear.

I dun't think the world will end in 2012. The Mayans just got bored of making calenders.
ive been trying to tell people that forever. They just dont think it through.

2012 on the Mayan calender ( the most accurate calendar ever made by man) represents the ending of one (world, age, cycle) whatever you want to call it, and starts a new one.
So... it is not the end. It is the beginning.

I can't wait until Dec. 12, 2012. I'm going to love running around and watching all of the people who believe in this stupidity tearing themselves apart over "the world ending". On a more serious note, the suicide rate on that day will be high, I can already tell.
It's supposed to be the 23rd of December, not the 12th.
um.... who are the Mayans?
The Mayans.

And,,,you,,,are...wrong,,,
And whats the deal with people loving the Mayans all of a sudden?
They built their pyramids with pure man power, lacking both the wheel and pulley. I think that labels a society as a dud imo. I mean c;mon, you want to listen to these people fine, but do not put this end of the world stuff on the History Channel, which is about history and facts, not your crazed beliefs.
these people that have no concern for logic or facts irk me to no end
grrrr
Considering the Mayans created their calendars and the end of the world theory over 1,000 years ago, I don't think you can call them "crazed beliefs."
How is a society a "dud" if their sheer determination and will to construct great buildings didn't employ wheels and pulleys to help them?
Yes, the History Channel is all about history and facts. It's a fact of history that this is what the Mayans believed.

I... am.. right...
I read and don't watch the history channel. I've studied the Mayan culture.
I know what I'm talking about. Your opinion of the Maya is not important to anyone.
The fact is that the Mayan calendar is the most accurate and that it is cyclical so the world does not end in 2012 it cycles and begins again. That is the truth of the truth of their calendar and all I was hoping to help the OP with.
Btw- you do not need a wheel or pulley to accurately map the stars and track time in the universe.

I disagree, I'm pretty sure the Myans had 5 Apocalypses, and the first 4 were correct, (Please tell me if I'm wrong, heard this from a friend.)
um ok but if you read these they are so vivid it coul be anything...so like the twin towers who says that 2 wind mills taller and greater than any people in that city burned down? any city just making a point.

seems like apocalypse is never out of style, no matter what civilization us (ab)used for predicting it.
