I tank as a frost spec DK (lvl 72) and I absolutely love it. I normally group with friends and one of em happens to be a enchance shammy (lvl 78) and pulls ridiculous DPS comparatively to my TPS. If he opens from the get go, I have problems holding hate but if he gives me like 3 secs to frontload some TPS then I have no problems holding hate.
My rotation:
IT > PS > Pest > Howling Blast > DnD > OB >Then runic power dump with FS/Runic strike.
I've also never had ANY problems tanking bosses. A friend of mine has a prot pally and my normal group told me how this boss enraged and just crushed him like a tin can. As soon as the enrage popped I busted IBF (Icebound Fort) and UBA (Unbreakable Armor) and took little to no damage for the last 15% of the bosses life (this was in Nexus and Treeshaper was the boss). DK's have just as much ability to tank as Prot Wars/Pallies and Druids. Just gotta find the niche and ride it out.
This.
I was lazy earlier and decided not to reply when I first viewed the thread. I get back on and this guy says almost exactly what I planned to type. He even uses the same rotation. Its a very solid rotation. The only difference is, sometimes in naughty groups (Some of these friggin mages need to lay off the drugs and re-l2play) I'll save d&d for the OHCRAP moments, mostly thanks to mages now having a pushback spell.
But yes. If you roll frost, copy and paste this rotation into your memory and practice it while running friends through SM or something. Pure win.
IT > PS > Pest > Howling Blast > DnD > OB >Then runic power dump with FS/Runic strike.

Here's a tale - I did my first instance with my dk on live tonight, the nexus, at 70 (did plenty of runs on beta so it's not like i dont know what i'm doing, i just dont tend to do a lot of instances when leveling).
Anyways, I'm acting as dps, they got a dps priest, healing priest, prot pally, and mage. We get to the last boss, kierastrazsa. She enrages around 15%, wtfpwns the tank, subsequently wtfpwns the two other dps and the healer, so i'm left alone as the only person still on my feet to fight this boss. I get her to 1%, she kills me, I self-"rez" as a ghoul (shadow of death), and I kill the boss.
It was a kodak moment =P
Anyhow, most players right now just arent used to death knights - they dont want to risk us in their groups because they dont know how to work with us yet. Every other class has been in the game for almost five years now, people know how these classes work and how they mesh with each other, but dk's are something new and misunderstood, so people wont take the chance.
My advice: group with guild members.
haha, had this exact thing happen today....the group loved it.

As a non DK past 70 player, I've had good and bad experiences with DK's. A lot are able, but when you ask if they can tank, they don't flat out say "I don't have the gear or spec to tank". They just say sure, and you find out if he needs a kick or not.
I've had DK tanks that I literally had to respec my druid resto(at 70 for nexus) just to keep the tank alive, and I'm in ZA/kara gear pushing almost 1100 spell power. I've also had DK tanks that I healed thru 78-80 instances on my ret pally where I could melee my way to 100% mana every fight(still in ret spec).
I always make sure I compliment good tanks and healers, and also make sure that when I run into a tank that can't cut it, I let him know he needs to practice a bit more. Unfortunately, we can't see what presence he's in, but I've found unholy tanks to be the most versatile.
My favorite trick I saw a DK tank do. He pulled the melee with DC and popped DnD on the casters while they were still at range, and put spell bubble over the group while they were attacking the melee mob. I was very impressed with his creativity. I gave him kudo's for the great job tanking. =)
