My account was hacked about 2 months ago. I came home from work and tried to log in only to find that my password didn't work. I went to the site and changed it to a different password immediately. I then opened my gmail account and found that I had been notified of the hackers password change about an hour earlier.
When I got logged into my account my warrior was standing in Shadow Labs. All gold was gone. About the only things I had left were some greens from Shadow Labs (loot from the chest that the farmers go into Shadow Labs to get at). I was still wearing all my armor and weapons but my bank had been cleaned out. Everything that could be sold for gold had been removed. The guildbank which I had full access to was empty as well. Just some cloth and quest items remaining. I had been saving for my epic mount at the time and lost about 4000g.
As for the recovery I immediately filed a petition detailing what had been lost and the time frame during which the items had been taken. I noticed that I had a new lvl 1 warrior on my account and sure enough when I logged into this new warrior I found that he had some of the enchanting materials that had been stolen in his mailbox. Within a couple hours the GM returned the items that had been in my character's inventory. And in less than a week I got back every single item that had been stolen from the guild bank, and every bit of the 4000g. I'm very appreciative of Blizzard's response, and it reassured me that should this kind of thing happen again they would be helpful in getting everything put back.

The easiest way to protect your password is entering your password with some sort of mouse clicking involved. If you have a keylogger, it can't tell where you clicked on the screen.
However, the above method doesn't work against screen recording malware, but that is rare, and when you have it on your computer, performance drops significantly.

For me it had to have been malware because I never gave my login information to anyone. I suspect the most likely point of compromise was logging in to the official wow site to post on the forums. I'm not suggesting that their site is compromised, just that the malware on my computer picked up the login when I went to their site.
At any rate I ran an exhaustive set of scans afterward and now I change my password every week or two and continue to scan regularly. I like the concept of the authenticator (I use something similar in my work) but unfortunately I think they are only for non-US players.

i was hacked yesterday while i was logged in my death knight running blood furnace. i just suddenly got dc'd and i couldnt log back in. i went to account management, and it said they changed the email address as well as the password.
i told my friend, who is in my guild as an officer, and he immediately kicked me out of the guild and started yelling and swearing at my main, telling him to get off my account. he even locked down the guild bank completely to everybody.
im a little worried, cause blizz has only said they will come back to me in a couple days. i had 4000g on him, working for my epic, and i persum its all gone. i have ordered an authenticator, hopefully it will help.
