Drain life
!=
Drain Soul
however, levelling affliction will usually finish off some mobs with drain soul meaning that you will almost always have too many rather than too few shards.
you can use addons or macros to limit the number but i find the best way is to put some in your bank. the game limits soul shards to 32 per character. you can't get more than that so if you (for example) put 12 in your bank that means you will never receive more than 20 while out levelling.

Necrosis got a special feature for this (awesome Warlock addon btw) where you can limit your amount of Shards in your bags from 0 to 32 by a scale. As I'm leveling my 8'th alt atm that happens to be a Affliction spec'ed Warlock, I find this to be extremely nice and and easy way to automatically discard any surplus Shards that I might get during Drain Soul.

if you're using nerosis anyway then that's cool. there are also very small addons that only serve that one function.
i used to love necrosis, it was a really impressive addon when it was first created and the number of times it has been copied says a lot about how good it was. however, we've come to expect a bit more from our addons these days and, for me, necrosis just feels a bit 2006 ^_^
still, i would never say someone's crazy for using it. if it suits you then it certainly still has a lot of great functionality.

This looks promising, I plan to level a Goblin lock once cata hits and after I've gotten my main to be 85, so I'll be frequenting this page often. Keep it up.

I think you should have made a new thread...
edit- ok I don't mind, google still had the original cached so I have a copy now.

i think there's a fair point being made here kappa.
your old content got stickied. making such heavy edits to something that's already stickied begs the question "at what point isn't this the thread people reported to be stickified?"
also, people still rely on that old content and will right up to cataclysms release (my best guess = 4months away).
perhaps you could copy the cached content back into the stickied thread and start work on a new one in a new thread. if the content you make for cataclysm is anything like this one i have no doubt it will be stickied and appreciated by masses of people.
