QuestHelper vs. Carbonite
Return to board index

Carbonite, the full package, asks for a small payment. Carbonite Quest is free at wow.curse.com.
I prefer carbonite, because vs. QuestHelper, it
#1 Uses less memory (I WoW on a relic from the dark ages that only supports UPTO 2gb RAM)
#2 It doesn't tell me what order to do my quests in and point me in that direction (I've found when QuestHelper does this it often omits little details like gorges, mountains, and whether or not i really feel like taking on a quest for reward B before proceeding to quest which rewards reward A) and trying to change it manually is nightmarish (it often will ignore you when you try to set your own priorities, and reset them to what it likes whenever you complete/accept a new quest)
#3 The mini-map carbonite has is amazing. You can customize it in all kinds of ways and not slow your gaming down.
Its my opinion that QuestHelper is actually best for beginners to level 40 or so (as beginning areas are more linear in nature) and Carbonite there on out. Both have their glitches and bugs (most notably, both have demonstrated that they screw up on quests in instances, and on quests which require items you might get from a vendor only, or need to buy from an Engineer etc) but its a matter of preference. Pick your poison.
As to the debate as to add-ons for quests vs. not using them:
Not what this thread was for. Nerd rage elsewhere please.

I use questhelper, lightheaded, and carbonite. All at the same time. Sometimes when it's "Find mob X" Questhelper will put you in the general area, that's when I mouse over carbonite, which points me exactly to it. They both have their perks. Use em both, I say.

With this james' levelling guide, do you need to pay for his guides?
No. They are provided free of charge. licensed under the GPL i think.
As to the debate as to add-ons for quests vs. not using them
The premise of this debate is that many think its the fastest way to level. which isn't the case.

Does questhelper still have that ADD condition where it CONSTANTLY changes the route, even when you're standing still?
I stopped using questhelper and went over to carbonite that day, only thing I miss is that I can't download UI's where the minimap is inside the UI.

I've seen many people mention that they like the fact that Carbonite shows you the area where specific mobs are located.
You do realize that QuestHelper does this as well, right? Open the map and mouse over the mark for a type of mob required for a quest. The area where that mob can be found is highlighted. Not only that, but if the mob can be found in other parts of the zone, or if a different mob can satisfy the same requirement, it highlights all the areas where the needed mobs can be found.
I haven't tried Carbonite, so I can't judge which is better... just pointing out that functionality on QuestHelper.

Peronsally I use QH but I havnt tried carbonite. I have found that QH can have a few problems such as in LK having trouble with where npcs are when phasing is used and that i seem to crash more when QH is on. I would suggest trying both and seeing which you like more.
P.S. to those talking about james leveling guide please stop advertising so blatently and just please answer the question the OP asked.

Carbonite wins the game. Why? It has the ability to make a small layout on were the mobs can be found/killed. Less setup in beginning is also a bonus, thou I'd only prefer having one map instead of 2, but I shall look that up in the code anytime soon and edit that part out.
As for Carbonite it has the very same support as Cartographer making yet another bonus and that makes me able to turn off that addon as well. I don't like the routing nor have I ever used because I'm not handicapped. QH used to suffer (unless the dalaran bug is still there as I've heard) from loading times and bugs that were fixed daily because of people on private servers uploading "junk" to the maker himself.
Unless your retarded there is always /tar X to find a specific mob, because some tend to
move
around you know. All in and all Carbonite is lightweight and portable and don't suffer from localization bugs like QH does. For example QH brings in alot of locals so that users can switch. But what If I'm okay with just the US local, what If I'd like to remove the others? Well for starters that's not even possible and for the rest, people with CPUs that cant handle WoW properly might find a problem quite often with QH as well that it hogs RAM quite brutal.
Good luck with encrypted code(atleast with the bought version), and the full version can do both(One map and two)

That's an excellent analogy.
I guess it's more of a person's justification for rewards. For example, I enjoy knowing that I had to read the quest, and either sit and think about what to do from there or go exploring until I find what I need. The sense of personal accomplishment gained from the fruition of your efforts is far greater when you've done it yourself, or at least I like to think.
It's like playing Halo on Easy versus Legendary. You're experiencing the same stuff, just one of you has to work harder at it, for a greater sense of accomplishment. But, at the end of the day, you both beat the game, you just got there different ways.
Seneca,
There is a big difference between what you posted here on page 3 and your original post on page 1.
The way I see it, addons such as QuestHelper virtually play the game for you, telling you where to go and what to do. The only different between QuestHelper and a botting program is that QuestHelper, instead of sending the information to do what's needed to a program, it sends it to you.
There really is NO excuse for such utter laziness. I hope the collective userbase of all "play the game for me plz" addons dies in a fire.
Also, I wish Blizzard would police its capability for addons. They don't slave countless hours, days, weeks and months creating content such as quests just for you to minimize your interaction with said content.
Addons like that turn the game from immersive to reactive.
You guys are the cancer killing the World of Warcraft player base.
IMO MODs like QuestHelper do not play the game for you at all. They simply offer a facility to organize the quests in an easy to manage order to allow you to efficiently find and complete the objectives, without wasting time having to re-research every location..
You don't have to use them, and if you feel more accomplishment and self gratification from doing the quest without aid, then more power too you. You shouldn't berate people for their idea of fun. I'm glad you feel accomplishment, but who are you to tell everyone else how to have fun? I think Blizzard meant for everyone to enjoy the game in their own way, and provide many facilities to accomplish this..
On Topic:
Personally, I love QH, its not bloated like Carbonite (Sure it has more features), but it gives you enough information to get you where you need to go, and its completely free, where Carbonite carries a fee.

Carbonite. I tried QH for a while, but found I actually didn't need its main feature, quest routing. I much prefer Carbonite's minimap that clearly shows where quest objectives are but doesn't try to calculate a route. QH also felt like it slowed my machine too much, Carbonite feels less resource-intensive, despite including the minimap.
