How I would prevent these downtime problems

I would test things no less than a week in advance.
Maybe Bliz does this, maybe they have alternate servers that pretty much mirrior the play servers in order to try and anticipate what problems may arise during the upcoming maintenance but it doesn't appear that way.
I honestly don't usually get upset at the downtimes, not normally. Especially when those downtimes are caused by something from outside Bliz's control, i.e. AT&T servers they lease crash.
And when there is an appearant program problemt that doesn't bother me all that much either.
BUT THESE DAMN ESTIMATED TIMES !@#$ ME OFF. I mean seriously, can't Bliz just say they don't know when the problems will be resolved and leave it at that. I know and understand they want to give out as much information as possible to their customers but this
"servers up at 2pm, no 4pm, uh no 6pm, wait no I mean 7pm, psych I really meant to say 7:45pm....alright alright this time I mean it, the servers will be up at 10:22 and 30 seconds....I swear on my mother's left nipple."
OK there is my anti-blizzard rant. You can now lock this thread as it is pointless and meaningless other than my avenue to vent.
Oh and btw to all you people doing your flawed math. You have no idea how much money Blizzard made but I do. I read their 3rd Quarter report and Activision Blizzard (their proper company name) made $711 million in the 3rd Q.

What about people like you who don't understand how to read financial documents?
You know what, I won't even say anything, but
HERE
is Q3 report.
"Net revenues for the third quarter were a record $1.48 billion" ... "Net income for the third fiscal quarter was $272.2 million, for $0.86 in earnings per diluted share"
Lrn2rdGAAP plz
1.48B was for all of Vivendi. Lrn2rdGAAP
EDIT: Hey, your link is different than the report posted on the Vivendi website which identified the Activision Blizzard numbers differently. Seriously...I just don't feel like finding the link. The one I read was from 5 Nov 08, not February. You are reporting the 2007 numbers.

I declare this a game topic. We shall now state how we would prevent these downtime problems.
Example.
I would prevent these downtime problems by firing the person who's reheating pizza on the servers.
Your turn.

Alright Rizzaro I decided to look up the report just because I love to &*!@ off trolls like you by proving how much of a !@#$%^ some of you can be. In your haste to quickly bash me as L2GAAP, you need to L2READ. The date of your post was for the 3rd Q of 2007. I was repeating the numbers from 2008.
http://www.vivendi.com/vivendi/IMG/pdf/081105_ATVI_ResultsQ3-2.
For the quarter ended September 30, 2008, Activision Blizzard's GAAP net revenues were $711 million.

Actually if you think about it, we really don't get inconvienced all that often for the amount of hours we play. And if you break down your montly subscription to a daily cost you are only paying $0.50 a day. I don't know about you but I !@#$ out more money in beer than that.

Maybe you have zero idea of the complexities of developing and running an MMORPG.
You have zero idea of the complexities of developing a reading standard. If you would have read my wild rant you would have seen I admitted it wasn't a very cogent statement.
I do understand the complexities as my statement knowing and understanding the details of Blizzard's business structure and with whom they are in contract with for their servers and bandwidth.
But I can understand how you would miss reading that when you didn't read past the subject line.
