ok im a 60 hunter and im thinking about what 3 pets to have when i get to 70, obviously ther are only 3 slots available so i started thinking about wat 3 pet styles would be most useful to me, i have decied that 1 slot is for a pvp cat (although many say boar for pvp) 1 for an instance pet (I dont know which 1 yet, help & advice much appreciated) and as for the third, after i have learnt all available skills i wont need a spare slot until the 80 lvl cap so...... gimme your thaughts and your own personal choices and hopefully ill learn a thing or 2 :)
What 3 pets do you have & what 3 would you reccomend?

I have:
Cat for PvP (dash is very nice for catching pesky Sprinting Rogues)
Boar for solo PvE (great tanking pet)
Scorpid for group PvE (Scorpid poison is nice since it scales, it can do nice amounts of damage)
Boars are very useful in PvP due to charge.
Also, rumor has it that we may be getting more stable slots...but its just a rumor at this point and has no official source.

thakyou for your post ruleofthumb, also good to here about an extra stable slot that might be =) and im sorry djdawg89 but i dont think that dash/dive makes a pvp pet, although it is needed i believe it is only part of wat is needed as cats have the same base stats but gain the prowl skill aswell

Personally, I have a boar and an owl. I mean to get a raptor for PVE purposes but the owl is good enough for now. The raptor is very tempting though, especially with the addition of Dash, making them an excellent choice for PVE. It's always fun to get one of the low level raptors with a cool look such as
Takk the Leaper
! Your best bet is to find pet(s) with the sort of characteristics that you feel will best assist you in whatever you decide to do in any given situation. Typically I'd assume most hunters grab a PVE DPS pet, a PVP pet, and a PVE/farming tank/resist pet.
I greatly recommend the following sites for more information on hunters and their pets:

Happy hunting!

Since you are level 60, I would say only keep 2 pets for now until 70. Make sure you use the 3rd slot to learn ALL of the Hunter pet abilities.
At 70, go out and find that pet that you really want and then level it up to 70 (will be a pain but rewarding in the end). At level 70 you will not have to worry about all the other pets skills since you know them and can now enjoy all 3 pets.

My advice, don't bother leveling multiple pets. You don't need a different pet for instances or anything like that -- the same one can be used for PvP and anything else too. The difference in tanking ability is very minor between pets, and in PvP the damage is mostly all that counts.
I would recommend a cat, raptor, ravager, owl, bat -- something offensive with a spammable damage ability and a dash/dive.
The one other pet you might look into is the scorpid (you can tame a level 69 once you're finished) for specialized arena applications.

Hmmm... I normally just use a cat for everything, though I do have the dragonhawk, because I think it looks cool. heh
I have thought about picking up a raptor now that they can use Dash, I keep my cat specced with Bite, Growl, Prowl, and Dash. Works well for me.

PvE..."What spec are you?" is a good question to ask. If you enter into a raid as BM hunter then having a balanced pet for dmg and armor/hp is ideal i.e. Ravager, Wolf or Cat. But, honestly the BM pet buffs make most pet options for raiding useful and not worth the headache of over analysis. If you are Marks/Surv, a pet doesnt matter much at all because fooling with a pet is just an extra keystroke or two that could be used for additional shots. I dont even pull my pet out during raids unless it is used to distract a mob long enough to be tanked or used to "Eyes of the Beast" pull large groups of mobs.
For raids, uh... Scorpids are actually the best right now, for pure DPS, marks OR BM. I'm too lazy to get one, so I use a wolf for furious howl buffs . Gogo extra 45-57 damage every 10s?
If you're not using a pet in raids, you're gimping your damage. End of story.

Two pets that I've seen quite often in groups/raids are the warp stalkers and ravagers. Ravagers can be found in Hellfire Peninsula, and I believe one other place, but I can't remember right now. : P
Warp stalkers can be found in Terrokar and Netherstorm.
However, I'd have to agree about the scorpion for a raid pet. Its poison scales quite well.
Personally, I use a cat on my Hunter, but he's only 44. Once he hits Outland, I'll probably switch the cat out for a ravager or warpstalker. Once my Hunter hits 70, then I'll probably pick up a scorpion.

I use my Hunar for almost everything, from PvP or raiding. I have a bear I use from time to time if i think ill need that extra armor to solo a high lvl mob for a quest. I have a wind hawk but i never use him.

Have to be careful which warp stalker pet you tame as some have "caster" stats and are much less desired. Also, wouldn't scorpid poison knock off other debufs?

Personally, I currently have a cat for pvp and an owl for pve. Advantages for cats in pvp have already been mentioned, so no need to go there. As for the owl, I seem to find warriors/druids who never use demoralizing shout so the owl's screech is a nice debuff while being extra damage. I'm debating about filling the third spot with either a scorpid or raptor, most likely raptor seeing as I've always wanted one but have never gotten one due to the lack of dash. On my 29 twink hunter, I have a boar which I usually just keep by my side to use its charge as a spell interrupt.

wow... thanks for all your feedback :) much appreciated =) im now going to go for: PvP cat, prowl, bite, dash & claw, full frost & shadow resist with spare points on armour, for PvE I'm feeling that scorpid is the only option untill they nerf the poison and 3rd a balanced grinding pet or a vanity pet just for fun :)
