There are few reasons why my main character is a female. (I'm a male irl) Most of these have been mentioned earlier.
1)
Yes. They get treated better in-game. :) But I never hide that I'm a male irl. I just... avoid saying it.
2)
Female belfs have an avesome attitude.
3)
They look better. Male belf anyone? Ugh they are horrible...
4)
Male wearing a dress? (warlock)
5)
It's fun to annoy my friend /flirting to his male tauren all the time :)
6)
I like to RP.
and the most important:
7)
I had been playing with my MALE warlock all day, and a friend came and said:
"Sooo you have been staring to that guy's ass all day?"
/reroll
PS. My advise is that don't try to hit on anyone in wow, even if they claim something considering theirl real life. I know a guy in wow who tried to hit on my IRL (male) friend and he really thought that my friend is a female IRL and they should meet... After a few weeks when I found it out and told it to the guy, he ... didn't like it.

Well before I played WoW all my toons were male.
Then when I got to try WoW, I wanted to make a night elf. So I log in and click on Create a new character and I choose NE male and...
And I seriously promptly clicked on female. Just couldn't stand how the males looked.
Since then all my toons have been female. It's a sort of tribute to my very first toon. I've played all races, and even when I played a race with not-so-good-looking (to me, right, just my personal taste) females, such as dwarves or orcs (orc women are awesome, but I hate the way they move :( ), they were female.
Now I must admit that with WoW I grew used to play female, so even in other games I play I make female chars. Even in solo games, where I can't possibly expect other players to treat me right, since there's only me. When I play, I never hide I'm a male, though. Not if people ask me. But I let those who don't ask anything think what they want to think. If someone tries to hit on me, I just don't react and they usually leave me alone. Or you can remind them WoW is not Meetic.
As for men in robes and women in armour... I don't see why people think robes aren't suitable to men. Did you never see any real life priest? Now, I don't know what they look like in the States, but here in Europe they wear robes - and nobody is shocked. Same goes for women, someone mentioned Joan of Arc earlier, I think it's a great example of that a "skinny" can prove being quite strong.

mmorpg = many men online roleplaying girls.
That a side. I belive it is just for the in-game models. It has no real life effect or anything of the sort. It's just different character models, perhaps it has nicer action moves, looks better or sounds better. I doubt you should read any real significance into if the real player is a man or a woman.

They miss guild wars where you could make the character go almost completely naked :P.

First, I'm a guy. I play on horde side on a PvP server.
Female characters are hot I agree. (Draenei females, I love their horns <3)
However most of my characters are male, don't really know why. But I like that I can /flirt with every female I see, including opposite side without feeling weird or something.
However I would roll a DK female Bloodelf if their 2h weapons weren't so damn small.. that's why I'm rolling a male UD DK.
Also would like to quote Alaeca @ Zalgradis Paladin PvP 3 movie regarding the issue (just for fun):
"
if you're going to be staring at a screen all day...
would you rather be staring at hot ass? or mancleavage?
"
I bet most guys pick the hot ass one. =P

Exactly what difference does it make?
I have male characters, and a female character. In my case it's because I wanted a horde pally and think the male belf model sucks.
Edit: Spelling and clarification.
That will also be my case.
I've tried to created a blood elf male, but I couldn't stand it.

Well, playing female characters means you end up looking at women all the time while you play... now given the choice, what would you rather look at all day, a man or a woman? Assuming that you're a guy, I would find anyone who answered that they would rather look at guys a bit strange.
I think what it comes down to is how secure you are personally, and how much importance you attach to what other people think. Men who play male characters are really just kow-towing to the herd majority... they really do prefer to look at women, but either identify too much with their character (scary in its own way tbh) or are afraid to make the logical choice.
;))
