I appreciate everyone for all the helpful advice. I'd just like to narrow down my original post a bit more after reading through all the suggestions.
Shadowstep aside, what sort of build would be well-rounded for PvP (specifically Battlegrounds) and five-man instances?
Since I'll be leveling with the cookie-cutter combat swords, it seems like that might be the build to stick with since I'll have time to familiarize myself with it.
Shadowstep still appeals to me, and so does a Mutilate spec. Just looking for some opinions.
Most builds will do well in battlegrounds and 5 mans. If I were you I'd stick with combat swords.
A build such as

will get the job done. It's not particularly focused on PVE or PVP more one way than the other, so it's probably close to the balance you're aiming for.

This is my current build. I'm a casual pvp player. I use s1 swords set.
I am loving my build, I tear clothies up, I have fun. I'm aware its far from the greatest, or most effective, but for me, it gets the job done, shadow step is fantastic, and I can't wait for 2.3.2, Kitings not a problem for me at all anymore. I'm sure you'd get forcibly butt-loved in an arena with my build, but thats not what I do. This is my build, I'd honestly recommend it, I've never had as much fun playing my rogue, as I am now.

In PVP with the setup talent - and while fighting any ONE particular person and being attacked by multiples - I can gain 5 CP's within my first 2 seconds of fighting from the other combatants attacking me (and my dodging); allowing me to use a finishing move almost exactly after my opening move on my target.
I believe this is all that's needed to prove you don't know what you're talking about. You tout Setup as being a primary CP building talent and yet you have no idea how it works?
The point here isn't that Shadowstep is awful and the OP shouldn't spec for it ever. The point is you're a moron.

The information is there for anyone who wishes to read it. It might not be expressed in a manner tailored to your tastes, but it's quite easy to ignore the cat-calling if you're uncomfortable with it.

We all know what this means, right guys?
Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I liked to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air
In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Startin making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'
I begged and pleaded with her day after day
But she packed my suite case and send me on my way
She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket.
I put my walkman on and said, 'I might as well kick it'.
First class, yo this is bad
Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass.
Is this what the people of Bel-Air Living like?
Hmmmmm this might be alright.
But wait I hear there're prissy, wine all that
Is Bel-Air the type of place they send this cool cat?
I don't think sow
I'll see when I get there
I hope they're prepared for the prince of Bel-Air
Well, the plane landed and when I came out
There was a dude who looked like a cop standing there with my name out
I ain't trying to get arrested
I just got here
I sprang with the quickness like lightening, disappeared
I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I can say this cab is rare
But I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel Air'
I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
I looked at my kingdom
I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air
