First of all ask your raiding mates again if their guilds accept casual players. Even if you can't commit loads of time to their raiding programme, if you approach them with an attitude of willingness to learn and to help out wherever you can, then most mature players would give you a chance. When they are not raiding they might need to do a normal or heroic instance late at night when there's not many people on, or their alts might need a hand, then they will be glad they invited you and taught you how to PvE. Before you know it you might get the chance to do a bit of raiding yourself! However if they are a really hardcore elitist guilds they might not find the time to help you, in that case I would say, make some new WoW friends in a more casual guild. If your raiding friends are decent friends then they will at least try to point you in the right direction even if their guild leaders aren't interested.
I can't give you advice about how to find a good guild as I was lucky and progressed straight from total noob at computer games to being invited to a great guild by my real life mates. I haven't raided with them yet but having guild members to do dungeon runs with taught me how to PvE. Pick-up groups are sometimes fun but most often a complete nightmare. A good guildy will forgive your mistakes and explain what you did wrong, they will also praise you when you do it right and even feel glad for you when you win some nice lootz! If your new guild has an experienced Hunter then he'll probably be happy to explain to you how to do your job in dungeons. This is a game after all and it only takes a bit of patience to pick it up.
And do go back to Azeroth and stick your head inside all those fun instances you missed out on...
