There are *MANY* tricks pally tanks do to take damage to get mana back. The paladins you are describing that have to take a mana break after every pull are failing in this area.
Tanking without a shield is one thing. Using a 2 handed weapon is fun in these cases. Or just taking off pants or boots or something.
Sitting down. This is my favorite. If a melee attack hits a sitting target, its a crit 100% of the time. The tank will take the damage he needs to get heals for mana. *DON'T* say this will get the paladin killed. If his mana bar is empty and will not go up, that means his health bar is full. He can take a crit, maybe 2 or 3. Believe me. The tank just has to be smart enough to know when to do it and when not to.
But when it comes to AOE tanking, the best thing to do is to turn around for 15 seconds or so. You will take every attack coming at you. No missing, dodging, blocking, or parrying. The only mitigation is armor.
Here is the concept of these theories. If you don't take the damage to get heals, you outgear the mobs your tanking. So, give them an advantage and let them hit you a little bit harder.
No damage = no heals = no mana. Forcing damage on yourself = heals = mana.
Think about it. 45 minute ZA bear runs almost require a pally tank. How can you do a speed run and kill 4 bosses in 45 minutes if you always have to get mana after every pull? In the case of ZA, the mobs do enough damage to keep a constant mana pool. Because like I said earlier, they are taking the damage they need to get the mana they need.
2 pieces of T6 is a bonus because it increases the amount of mana returned from spiritual attunement. But finding one of these for a heroic is rare, especially if your pugging.
