You can make a macro-that-isn't-really-a-macro to show the quantity of any item like so:
(For example, using Badge of Justice.)
#showtooltip
/use Badge of Justice
Even if the item doesn't actually have a "use" effect, it will still work, assigning the icon and showing stack count on the button.

There is, at least for me, a better way than using macros for determining how many of any one item you have in your inventory(s)
I use the addon
Bagnon
Simply mousing over any in-game item will let you know how many you have and on which toons.

is there a way of doing this so that the resulting number can be used later in the same macro sort of like
if number > 5 then use xxx
else

So true! Though it should be noted, in Classic Era / SoD, you have to use the more verbose version (including /use) or else it just shows the item with a count of 0.
