This exchange of... comments is kind of what the author is talking about.
I agree as well and from a similar standpoint. I have three 70's and I Main Tank for an SSC/TK/Hyjal guild and I find the game quite fun especially when facing new content but the attitude of the average WoW player isn't what it used to be back in the days of MC and ZG. The game in general has taken somewhat of a negative turn in the relations department from player to player. Nine times out of Ten whenever I enter trade chat to get a gem cut or an enchant done that my guildies can't do I am bombarded with comments from either 14 year old cyber bullies that think being tough in a game will make them tough in real life or young adults in their 20's that use words such as "scrubs" or love to use the typical Internet cliches such as "ORLY" or "OVER NINETHOUSAND?"
Some words have even lost most of their original meaning and weight such as Gay and Rape. As a boyfriend to a rape victim I find myself grinding my teeth in anger whenever that word's serious meaning is trivialized by some teenager who just beat another teenager at a video game.
With the development of this online community Jonathan Gabriel's Internet !@#$wad Theory is becoming more and more plausible
Normal Person + Anonymity + Audience = Total !@#$wad
I mean there's a point where you just have to grow a thicker skin and deal with it but beyond that there is another point where the game I enjoy is not worth the negative environment anymore.

I have zero tolerance for people that get this "I'm going to be a prick now because nobody can see me or do anything about it" attitude in Mmo's.
Over the course of almost 4 years playing wow, because of my zero tolerance policy I am now guildless on all 5 of my 70's, have no remaining friends left to play with, only chat to occassionally because they can tolerate the asshats in their guilds while I can't associate myself with them.
The game has pretty much become a solo player affair except for queuing for BG's since I can no longer find decent pug players who have any sort of courtesy towards one another and do not hesitate to show it at the drop of a dime. Everyone thinks this game is counter strike or something, it's surreal how bad it's become.
Because I took the road of being chill, treating people with respect, not losing my normal manner over a simple video game or loot, and left bad situations as soon as people showed thier "ugly side" I've realized that I'm in a small minority of players against a sea of spazzes who are beyond hope.
I barely play this game now, it's the community beyond a doubt. Once you get a bit older and the same pattern repeats itself dozens of times everywhere you go...you realize it's not getting better and not going to change, so you either accept it and adapt or move on.
Nothing can change this aspect of the community of this game, people are getting stupider, meaner, ruder and *less* skilled while more ready to show it as time goes on oddly enough.
The people that I've met that are like-minded and I've guilded with no longer even play, my friends list has dozens of people I've played with over time that are cool, they are out there...but I guess I'm one of the last to bother even logging in to this game anymore.

I try not to be an @$$ hole, but sometimes, its hard not to be a jerk when jerks are picking on you. I'm generally a nice person when ya get to know me.
And if you think the people in the game are bad, visit the official WoW forums. Ugh....

Alliance side on my server, idiot 12-year-old Cyber-bullies are extremely common. It's hard to enter and leave a capital city without hearing at least one "U dont kno me so stfu u nerdtard".

I think it's down to people taking the game too seriously - if people want to be top dps too much, and don't get there, it's a source of envy, jealousy, and ill-feeling all around.
Which is why RP servers tend to be a bit better, folks there are more into role-playing than lewt-chasing or being Uber.
But that's something that's hard to fix... I think it's more a sign of the times than anything else. Lots of young people seem to want everything, and they want it now, which is kicking in when people see past the illusion of a real world. After all, WoW is a very abstract simulation of a world, underpinned by game mechanics which are meant to be understood by the player, and eventually the illusion goes even though your eyes and your ears are telling you it's a real world. That's the point at which the magic goes, and it becomes just another game, albeit a very good one, and people start to approach it differently.
There's a good chance it also has something to do with the time since the last big content release... people getting restless.

Ahh I remember the magic. When mining a copper vein was an experience or when you took a quest you read it and took your mission to heart. But now instead of braving the anceint ruins of some long lost civilization to discover the lost evil that caused the kindgom to fall, you're walking down the steps, waiting for the ghosts to spawn, shackling them, running past, looting the shiny thing on the ledge and running past the ghosts again to earn a green piece of armor.
Now I'm a major lore buff, dont get me wrong. I half squealed when I saw screenshots of Rhonin and Krasus in WotLK but I still dont feel the original spark that came with killing Van Cleef the first time.

longer the game has been out= the more we figure out about the "correct" things to do, and then alienating the "bads" becomes easy. and enjoyable for some people.
Best advice I have is to take everything with a grain of salt, the only reason it's ever really a "problem" is because people let it get to them.

It's a community. If you can't deal with negative attitudes as well as you deal with positive attitudes, then the problem lies with yourself, and not others.
I was in a EoTS and some mage was making fun of this other mages gem sellection. I mean seriouly and the one he was "making fun of" was top dps. While the other one was half his dps. So, what the hell is with the negative targeting people. Who the heck cares about someones gems?
Top DPS doesn't mean &*!@. AoEing your way to leet damage in a BG is something a monkey can do. Gemming properly however actually takes some shred of intelligence.
Sure he may have been immature and stupid to call the mage out for no reason on it. But maybe he was just overcompensating because he feels bad about himself and his own skill and knowledge.
But there is a point where tolerance is not enough. When you see some kid in trade chat yell "yo I $%^&ing raped his face in with yo mom" for the thousandth time I just literally get the urge to throttle him. I mean, what goes through these kids minds that makes them act like that.
I mean it is a game but this isn't, dare I say, Halo. It's an immersive environment that is supposed to be built on the community.
Today I had the pleasure of a Hitler conversation in my trade chat. Most were kids saying "I'm not saying he was a great man, he was a great military leader" or being complete jackasses and saying "Hitler was a god" or something similar. Excluding a Neo Nazi gathering where in the world would you hear someone say "Hitler is a God" to your face? World of Warcraft apparently has evolved into a place of such valuable anonymity that it is being abused.

Indeed hard to find, I'm new to kara, I joined raid group, and my armor isn't the best for kara, they were picking on me, instead of just telling me.
Later that day I did hc ramparts with guild mates, same gear, it went BAD, verry bad. I'm tank and undergeared, but we whiped 10 times (yes 2-3hours on that silly instance, we tried 4times last boss I think) and they were not picking on me :) everyone had 30-50g repairs but they still did nice to me. I'm glad I'm in a friendly guild.
