Good post, you got most of it right, except for this.....
Untill you start reaching end game gear like bt and sunwell. you will get more avoidance from res+agi than pure def.
Except that the poster was right on that count. Defense does give more avoidance that Res + Agi, if converted in direct relationship. What the poster was wrong on is that we only benefit from Crit negation and Dodge. We also benefit from increased miss chance. That makes us benefit from 3/5 of the effects, and if we consider the fact that the effect on Block is less than on other stats, we probably get roughly 65-70% of the value Warriors and Paladins get.
The gear that offers pure def is absolute crap.. and even though you get dodge from the def, you loose it from the lower agi, if any at all...
The gear that offers res + agi is godly... it has high stam high agi.
While I disagree on the crappiness of many Defense items (by looking at the calculated mitigation/avoidance values), the PvP items _are_ godly for us, especially regarding their availability vs. equivalent gear from PvE.

You, my friend, successfully understood the benefits druids get from defense.
I'm unsure whether this was a highly sarcastic start or not :). I choose to take it as non-sarcastic, tho, so let's move on...
Seriously,
no one
counts chance to be missed as mitigation? It's better than dodge (unless it submits itself to mechanics that negate it further effectively than dodge), as it comes into effect from behind as well. Should you get struck from behind and be, situationally, stunned or having problems to reposition, dodge will not work. Your chance to be missed will.
The fact that it works from behind is a good one. I've never thought of it myself, and I've been through this many times. Thanks for pointing it out.
Yes, I know you should
never
turn your back to a mob, but sometimes you can't help it while positioning.
In fact, turning your tail to the boss (or any other mob) is an excellent way to get a big load of Rage quickly. Thus, those saying that there is a cap to Dodge because at some point you get too little Rage is just lack of playing skill. :)
Having no threat problems, I chose the defense as it gave me the best mitigation available.
The reason Resilience is good alternative is that it is slapped on items that are very good and very accessible to us Feral tanks. If it wasn't so, we would probably all focus on Defense to get crit immune. As it stands, I get way more immunity from Resilience than Defense because I wear a couple of PvP pieces.
People who are playing at T6 level and are thus using items that are better than the Arena pieces are again having challenges becoming crit immune. Much of the best gear (like all the T6 pieces) lack Defense, so they are limited to Rings, Trinkets, Necks and enchants as the primary sources of Defense.
Also, don't forget we take full advantage of neither. We dump parry and block. We also dump the critical strike damage reduction, mana burn reducing effects and DoT damage reduction, as the bonus is minor if not, inactive. So, again, they're quite close to each other in relativity to usefulness. I'm just a T4'd bear. I know what I'm talking about regarding heroics and T4 raids. For anything beyond, I'll leave it to you guys.
The maths don't really change regarding this post-T4. The reduced usefulness is taken into account in the calculations, as you also point out. The key difference between Defense and Resilience is that Defense has some practical value even when capped (the miss and Dodge parts), while Resilience doesn't (DoT's are still reduced, but they are not the ones that kill us when tanking).

it is not nessecary but it helps, we only need 415 Def rating to be def capped instead of the standard 490, so thats really only 154.05-155 def rating or 65 which is wat that converts to once u do the math to be uncrittable in TBC, or if you want to use resilience instead, which does work, u need 102.44=103 resilience rating to become uncrittable as a feral druid, make sure u have specced with SotF
edit: typo
edit 2: my proof that resilience DOES WORK!

What you need is crit reduction. Through whatever sum of resilience and def you achieve it doesn't matter.
