I find this to be a fantastic post and think it should be sticked. I was thinking about switching to AS just because I am getting more daggers than swords my self, but was a little unsure. Thanks for this guide/analysis, I will definatly try AS out.

Well I switched to AS, level up daggers (I hadn't used once since the teens) and got to only about 300/320 skill. I have to say I was very impressed and can't wait for my dagger skill to max out. When every thing lands right I go completely untouched even though my auto swing misses a lot.
sounds like you love your rogue as much as I do, judging by your sig. :P

Yeah, I think they are a blast. It's funny because when I bought the game and didn't know much about it I wanted to play a rogue cause it sounded cool. My buddy convinced me that I should play a druid, and this was because his guild needed more resto druids. Wish I listened to my self a long time ago.
I've played my rogue since '05 and he's still my only 70. Unforetunately I was forced to quit wow in may due to rl issues, but I'm omw back. Armory is in sig btw.
Edit: Deathblow goggles at 64? I think I love you. XD Btw, on your spec, initiative is pretty unnecessary with mutilate. Everything else looks pretty solid though. As far as leveling goes, I would personally put those 3 points in imp gouge, really helps with your energy management when fighting mobs.

I used to use deathblow over the s2 helm, they're so good. s3 helm wins over them but just be happy with the fact that you have an awesome helm for 70. Engi is win in pvp too :P Invuln belt was my best friend in s2 running rogue/lock @2300. Belt+healthstone saved my ass so many times.

I levelled from 58-67 as muti and have been muti my entire time as a 70, PvPing and only farming when i needed to. Farming as muti with arena weapons is trivial, but muti is more gear dependant than combat since a much large portion of your damage comes from the burst of your specials. Combat is easier to gear for during levelling.
My experience with muti in PvE is counter to this article. This article does not cover combat skills such as Blade Flurry and AR which significantly enhance the durability of a combat rogue in levelling by allowing 2 or 3 mobs to be taken on where the mutilate rogue would have to vanish or run.
I respecced back to combat for my last three levels because it was significantly faster, just using a couple of swords bought off AH. Muti is more fun but it does not provide the flexibility of combat in a PvE environment.
Also the claim that Muti can top damage charts in instances is entirely dependant on running with substandard DPS. Combat will generally be a good 10-15% ahead of Muti on damage meters.
There are benefits to levelling as muti but those are not to do with levelling speed - more to learning how to play the spec and how to control your target. NPCs are harder to control since you need to have them locked down to get behind them unlike a player controlled character. This experience gives a distinct advantage in endgame PvP. For PvP I could never be any other spec.
Also Muti only comes into its own when you are running with 120 energy. It makes a huge difference to the spec, which is not available until you are in arena gear.

Bladeflurry an AR are not simply safety nets - they allow you to take on groups of mobs that you would otherwise not be able to as well as giving you a safety net against adds. Since you can use them aggressively they have a direct impact on quest completion and kill rate.
The fact that mutilate has a positional requirement means you need to learn how to get behind an opponent to use it. This is possible in PvP by jumping through and turning in mid air but not possible in PvE. To gain the correct position in solo PvE you need to have control over the mob. A lockdown is a lockdown and being able to practice different locks on mobs is great since they react the same way every time.
For PvP getting 120 energy is a big deal. This gives you extra burst which is what Mutilate is all about in PvP. I agree in instances 100,110,120 energy the difference is not so large since you will not be building up energy but for PvP it is. Your comments on the viability of mutilate for 70 PvP are plain wrong. It is more than possible to get a very high arena rating as mutilate, it is simply a more difficult spec to succeed with. This simply encourages you to make fewer mistakes in play since they are more difficult to recover from.
You anecdotal evidence on Muti in instances settings is just that - perhaps the expansion will change things - but the DPS is lacklustre. It is a Burst PvP spec.

youre talking about speccing as in outlands, is as a viable spec for lower lvls to im lvl 39 currently?
outlands, mutilate won't work until later levels because you need to have mut+opportunity.

As it does work, viability is a broad statement based on the majority of players. Your incredible play skill and partners able to keep mutilate viable to your team are a testament to Rogue's awesome abilities, however in general I don't think I wanted to add a small chance of hope as Mut being a pvp spec without the ability to do it myself; most of us won't agree and that's just the way Subtlety works these days.
The reason why I said it was easier in PVE to lock down is basically the same as you just described earlier -- you are able to 'practice lockdowns'.
And quickly, blowing your AR and Blade Flurry cooldowns aggressively takes away from the whole reason why people don't choose Mutilate spec to level with to begin with -- the fall back feature.
Dying wastes more time than killing 2-3 extra mobs.Concerning Muti in PvP, it does clearly have mobility issues in comparison to ShS but this is counteracted by the burst potential. A well set up KS will usually result in ~5k damage to a full resilience target. Combined with wound poison/CCd healer such burst can be devastating. Following the nerf to cheat death and the introduction of puncturing wounds, Muti is a very viable alternative to ShS and more than possible to reach over 2k rating.
Onto Combat vs Muti for levelling - if I am looking at a group of 3 mobs that I need to kill as part of my quest, as combat I know I can go in there pop BF/AR and come out alive. As Muti I would have to avoid such a situation or use much more defensive cooldowns such as blind in order to complete that objective. BF/AR are not really defensive CDs and I always try and use both as they come off cooldown to increase kill/XP rate.
They can provide a safety net but rogues already have those in abundance with Evasion/Blind/Vanish. There were so many occasions levelling as Muti that I had to avoid mobs I would have ploughed through as combat.
PvE is all about sustained DPS while PvP is about burst. Muti is clearly a PvP spec. You can level as a Prot warrior/Holy priest if you wish, this does not make it a good levelling spec.
I never said a PvE lockdown was more difficult. Mobs have fewer skills to interrupt a lockdown so timing is not so vital. I said that it was harder to get behind a mob since they will immediately face you while in combat. A lockdown is not the game winner for Muti PvP anyway, having a target with a 5 point EA under a 5 point KS is the general aim for Muti in PvP.

I'm Ambush Sub specced atm and I'm searching for better swords or maces to respec to combat because I'm having difficulties dealing with the mobs (I'm lvl 60).
Now I've read every post in this topic I realy must say this is the FIRST thing I'm gonna try to do when I get home from work.
I've read it, tought of it and I must say this idea (Muti spec lvling) has popped up in my mind but guildies (mains are 70 muti pvp rogues) said this sucks for leveling, so I didn't even bother trying. Now I am convinced this will work according to the reply's of allot of people and the good 'guide'.
I'm gonna spec exactly as you say in the first post and will leave a comment (By editting this post) on how I like this.
The reason I am gonna try this spec is because I allready done the first few quests and picked both daggers from the quest rewards I wanted to spam Ramparts for the ohwsooverratedsword but not anymore. The green daggers from the first few quests are good daggers so I will keep those and try Muti spec.

Just wanted to add another thank-you for the insight into Assassination. I've never had more fun on my Rogue; I can only imagine how much more fun it's going to be when I'm 70 :P
Agree.. Leveling as assasin rogue is way more fun and easyer, Tough the talents in Sublety should I do different but thats to everyone himself I think.
