I used to hand out free enchants to people when I was leveling enchanting. Also, as a mage I'll give people my stacks of food/water before I log off, if someone's nearby. Of if I see anyone who is obviously not dps spec trying to kill something, I'll drop a 'bolt on it and take care of that pesky 5k remaining hp.

I've recently started doing my bit of paying in forward myself. I remember the occasional higher lvl helping me out when I was a newbie so like to help others if I can.
I got the bug following my first good deed when my main was about lvl 65. I was up in Hillsbrad (heaven knows why...fishing probably) and I bumped into a lvl 20 something (i think) who asked me if I knew where the mobs for a q he had were. I popped onto wowhead and checked for him then came along and helped him with the q. We added each other to our friends lists and I told him to shout if he needed me. We said our goodbyes and once he logged I mailed him 10g. Next time I was on the massive thankyou I got from him was definitely worth the gold.
Other good deeds include boosting deadmines for free, blasting mobs that people are fighting with a well placed moonfire etc as I run by and today I ran a lvl 10 from Darkshore to Rachet for nothing.
The way I look at it, there's no rush in WoW so why not help people out. I know how grateful I was when I was there, and to be honest how grateful I am still now with my fab guildies who continually put up with my noobish ways eventhough my main is now lvl 70!

If everyone gives each other 100g, aren't we just back at the place where we started? Thats why I never understood birthday cards, you give your friend $20 on their birthday, and then they give it back on your birthday but I still did it anyway. Why not just buy each other a card because thats exactly what you are doing.

No, what this is like is being in a restaurant and hearing the staff singing happy birthday to someone - and then buying their meal for them.
You aren't giving someone 1g, or 10g, or 100g, so that they can turn around and give it back to you someday; you're giving it to them to be a friendly, helpful person - and with the hope that someday the person you helped will see a different lowbie and remember what you did and help that lowbie out in some way.
I think tonight I'm going to make some bags and go distribute them to lowbies in Goldshire. Pay it forward all! :)

I do that sometimes, give the lower lvls some money and whatever I have crafted with my engineering at the time. Also if they ask me to make an item, I refuse to take payment for it. Tips are not welcome to me when helping out lower lvls, mainly because they need the money more than I do after I got my epic flight mount :)

Whenever anyone mentions anything about fishing issues, I'll send them a tell with the whole "how fishing works" routine. I usually send them a stack of Captain Rumsey's as well.
