Say no to rake kids.
I Rake Rogues to tick them off. Sometimes I will just Rake a rogue, FFF, and then go attack someone else. It pleases me.
EDIT:
I can't say pee eye ess ess? How is that a "bad" word?

I don't know if i do it correctly but i always try to:
Pounce, Mangle,
Rake
(bad dpe, and bad waste of a possible crit from shred while you can still do it during solo grinding), then Mangle till i got 5 points and Rip.
(In between when you don't have energy to do anything it's always nice to use your FAerie Fire (Feral) skill)
In group (when you aren't the center of attenting and got a good tank) you can probably just survive with a Pounce, Mangle and then Shredding the hell out of the mobs.
If you want to rake, wait till after pounce. Bleed is the most dpe out of your kitty, yes. You actually do more auto attack damage than you do mangle(or at least I do at 68 with quest gear on.... =

LOL! I use "p1ss" or "p!ss". I don't really consider it a bad word either... Especially when you can type pee....

My feral is (as of this post) 57, and I use pounce-FFF (Feral Fairy Fire, try saying that 3 times fast!)-Mangle-Shred as my opening rotation. I then follow with a Rip which is usually at 4 or 5 (if I'm lucky) combo points. If there has been no crits (very unlikely) I'll still rip at 3. I'll emit that I picked up the Idol or Ferocity the other day and now rake if I'm at 3 cp after my opening rotation, and I've received some nice crits off of it . I know this is a no-no in the eyes of the great feral theory-crafter in the sky (sky being elitistjerks forum), but 35 energy isn't too bad, the bleed is buffed by mangle, I have the idol for it, and I just damn choose to. :P
Back to the OP's question... Yes shred is great. Pre-50 (aka pre-mangle) pounce-fff (the armor decrease is sexy)- shred X2 is the bee's knees. At 50 and beyond, pounce-fff-mangle-shred is the cat's meow.
Remember shred is from behind.
If you can't stealth, I just fff and then mangle (I throw in the rake just to go against the grain :P) 'til I can get the Rip off. I never FB, even with the option of powershifting (Macro: /cast !Cat form)

I found out on saturday, after hitting 68 and having a spare point to put into ooc, that you
can
pounce>fff>mangle>shred and get an extra shred at the end if OOC procs anywhere in the rotation(including before, making pounce free).
This makes it useless for you to argue. ALWAYS use this rotation of pounce>fff>mangle>shred(>shred again if you get ooc). It does more damage, and nearly kills mobs if you get the OOC proc.

now can be talented to give you energy. I never saw
http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=52610
. That will definitely be the kitty version of
http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=6774
. Very cool! =) The dps is definitely looking much better in WotLK.
