It just seems like this expansion is catering to the high level players only and has little to nothing for new players.
New players don't need anything from the expansion, because they already have the entire pre-BC game to go through first. Just level up to 70 and then you'll understand why it would be pointless for blizzard to focus on low level content at this point.

I started out with TBC,so i started out with a blood elf (w00t) and i love it, but WoTLK adds the death Knight hero class and northrend so you have to be ahigh lvl to enjoy what it has to offer.
Again, why do you feel you need to enjoy what WotLK has to offer yet when you have only experienced a fraction of the original content so far? Go through the original content, then the BC content, and eventually the WotLK content like everyone else >.>

Low/Mid level content is already pretty much awesome as is.
Would be nice to see a few more lower level instances and new races of course, but for now they need to focus on the higher level content.

New talents, faster leveling, achievements..
There's many new stuff to keep WotLK's lowbie busy than a TBC lowbie is now. So, everyone is getting their slice of pie

I started when TBC was out for ages, so in fact i missed out on the lvl 60 pre-TBC content, as I simply levelled in Outlands since 58. I think the same thing will happen again when WoTLK comes out - people will miss out on both lvl60 content (i.e. ZG, Naxx etc.) and lvl70 content (i.e. Kara, ZA, BT)
I don't mean that the people won't do these instances at all. What i'm trying to say is that instead of, for example, doing lvl70 heroics lots to get early Kara gear, then doing early Kara lots in order to acquire gear for other instances... People will simply go in there in "Northrend greens" and do just fine

The quick answer is no, you don't need the expansion. But it really does not take any amount of time to get from 1-70 with a single character. You can definitely hold off buying it right away.. but my hunch is this... if you started playing today.. by the time WotLK is released, you will easily be lvl 70.
