May already have been mentioned but I don't see how you could expect anything else from a class infused with so many diablo-esque spells/abilities. My gf who plays as well (and who incidentally went on a /love parade with all the fuzzy critters of Azeroth) commented on the darker theme of Northrend and the starting quests for the Deathknights.
Personally I couldn't be happier. Anything that brings that dark demonic feel from Diablo into our Warcraft world is an improvement in my opinion. I guess there are all kinds of people even those offended by video game morality or lack thereof, but I say if the Deathknight ethos bugs you then roll a druid and hug a tree (or squirel).
In the interest of full disclosure I spent the entire DK quest chain giggling...

Hey, I remember this thread from back in the day, where everything was just speculation.
On another note, according to Warcraft Lore, the
Horde is certainly NOT evil
. At one time, the orcs were demonically posessed, but they have broken free and are good agents in the world. Callling the Horde evil is like calling Russia evil. Its just not nearly that simple, or true. On the other hand, the Lich King and his minions are a true representation of evil. The problem is, while your character supposedly "mind-controlled",
YOU
are committing simulated acts of mass murder by doing the mandatory quests in order to level. Blizzard would have avoided this whole issue by showing your character doing evil things in a cinematic, and then when YOU take over control, you have broken free of the Lich Kings influence and are free to do good things in the world in order to seek redemption. For those of you that like to play "the Dark side", World of Warcraft just isn't your game, and if you thought that the Horde was bad...you missed the point. I'm glad that they originally made WoW kid-friendly. In my opinion, Blizzard took a step backward by trying to appeal to the bloodthirsty nature of our society.
Now, Blizzard should add a
NEW PARENTAL CONTROL:
1. The inability to play the Lich King quests. Instead, you can log in as a level 55 death knight that has already broken free of the Lich King's command.
Few things.
"For those of you that like to play "the Dark side", World of Warcraft just isn't your game"
Is that...that's not really fair, is it? If someone enjoys an aspect of the game that you don't, they're playing the wrong game altogether? Is that what you're arguing?
I mean, for the moment, pretend that the word "war" isn't in the title. Seriously, though, this is a game where you cut a bloody swath of destruction through every land you set foot on. If you'll notice, anytime you get hit or hit someone else, there's a splash of blood that appears . You have dozens of assassination quests. Even starting outside of a peaceful church, there's someone who needs you to bring them someone
else's head
. That's not exactly kid friendly.
But, really, it's not like you're locked in to having played as a Death Knight for 40 levels, doing normal quests, and then you're blindsided by a "slaughter the orphanage" quest. They start out being bad. They look evil when you choose them on the character select screen. I'm sure the opening little blurb for them is evil. This isn't really a surprise, is my point.
In all honesty, if it really disturbs you, you don't have to play as a Death Knight. You're not even forced to play with the "evil" Death Knights, since that's a Death Knight only starting zone. By the time they get into Azeroth/Outland, they're "reformed".
Unless you just want the ability to play as a Death Knight without going through the quests. Because that's not exactly a fair expectation. That's like wanting to start off with free epic equipment without having gone through any dungeons, or wanting to start off with all of your spells/abilities learned.
A noble sentiment, just, y'know, not exactly realistic.

lol at this thread... been reading though it and with some people saying about it being bad and everything has made me think of the deathknight quest:grand theft palaminto... its only bad if you get caught, so you little kiddies that are looking on the forums just dont go on your death knight when your parents are near the pc... jk jk. And yes i think deathknights are great, doing the starter quests explains alot about the expansion itself

I love your post there Pacatafox! You are absolutely right... they are only pixels.
I can't believe some people can't distinguish this game from reality. And 10 pages of this? LOL

Honestly, I'm in agreement with a fair amount of the posters here. It's a game, an arrangement of pixels. There's hardly a moral issue to be considered here, but it occurs to me that there's an interesting point I've not seen brought up in this thread.
The 'innocent villagers' your deathknight is butchering are part of the Scarlet Crusade. Last time I checked, these guys were the Nazis of WoW. They hate anything non human, and more often than not, they kill anything that isn't human. Anyone remember the torture chamber in SM GY? Yeah, that's a really innocent organization, huh?
Personally, I think it was a stroke of genius to place the Scarlets in opposition to the DKs because it can be debated as to whether or not what your deathknight is doing is truely 'evil.'

Suffering. It's a common theme with Death Knights.
If you look at why that is then you may have a different perspective on the class.
All Death Knight's were tortured, mutilated, had their souls stripped from them and were ultimately killed in the most agonizing ways imaginable.... why? So they could suffer as none had done before, this was instrumental in their re-birth.
Through this process what was created were Death Knights, Beings that had died horribly and then returned with a new perspective. That at the very end of their life, once they had given themselves to death completely, their suffering pain and torment had ended.
That is why Death Knights no longer know fear, why they do not follow the same "moral" code of non Death Knights and why they can be perceived as being "baddies".
Even without the Lich King to lead them, many of the Death Knights created will still carry this perception with them. I found the end of the quest chain amusing because it took none of this into account, it was just assumed that we'd want to fight for the alliance or the horde. How many players would have stuck with the scourge I wonder?
I for one am disappointed that Blizzard have not truly looked into the darkness of Death Knights any further due to the frilly and pretty nature of "trying to keep everyone happy". I understand Blizzards point of view on these kinds of issues, however what I don't understand is people that will roll a class like a Death Knight, and then complain on forums about the theme of the character.
In all seriousness if it offends your delicate sensibilities please just use your brain, realise that the class labelled "Death Knight" may in fact not be for you and roll something else.
I for one enjoy "relieving other characters of their suffering".
