I prefer simplicity. Rather create a macro to say "WTB Nether Vortex x2 290g ea, pst" than have even more crap loaded into the Auction House.
I like the idea of having an actual Trade channel, though. I mean, one that doesn't sell the Total Gym jokes. /sigh

The bidding system is a bit flawed because people put things up on the AH fior 48 hours and most things are just bought out. When someone goes to the AH, they want to buy something right at that second and if it's not there or not at the right buyout price, they dont buy. Also, the bidding prices are usually always too close to the buyout price to make it worth taking a shot at.

That's the beauty of the capitalist system though. If you want say... a nether vortex. You go to the AH, search for 'em, and if you want it enough to dish out what people are asking for them, you get it. Otherwise, most people know how to get them outside of the AH. Items are only worth what people are willing to pay for them.

I agree, the OP's suggestion is good, and is used in a few games.
One of the most often missed 'requirements' of a capitalist system is that their has to be a large number of transactions in order for supply/demand to work. The more ways the game has to facilitate a trade means the closer we are getting to a fair system.
If 10 people all put an item up for 5gp, and 6 people secretly want that item, but won't pay 5gp.. then it takes a lot longer for a trade to take place. The sellers will probably just relist their item at 5gp, and maybe a few will drop the price until they hit the 'secret' buy price he buyers have in their head
If 10 people put the item up for 5gp, and 6 people but a bid order up for that item at 4 gp.. then those 6 transactions will take place much faster. (because the sellers know there are buyers actually demanding their item and at what price).

/sighI know what you're talking about. Shhhh, let's not mention his name...
Anyways... if there a change to the auction house that I would like to see it would be the ability to add mixed lots, e.g. a low level enchanter's package complete with dusts, essences, and shards.

I quite like the OP's idea - and it opens up a far more stock-market like economy.
I could log on for 30 seconds in the morning and put in a buy order for 20 Primal Waters at 25g.
If someone goes in and lists them at 27, no purchase. If 10 people during the day come on and each put up a couple of primal waters for 22-25g then I log on in the evening to find I've bought what I need.
Equally, if someone puts a purchase order in willing to pay a higher price then they get priority on the items that become available.
The major problem would be that AH traders would basically constantly have purcahse orders up for everything, meaning they had total control of the AH economy for those logging in to purchase items immediately.
^^ This!
Make sure you put in a purchase order or be prepared to pay a higher price. Really good idea.

So the entire focus goes towards formal ordering & the actual Auction House fails. All the "high" prices currently experienced shift into purchase orders...
Either purchase orders fail, or they succeed, eliminating the Auction House from all, but the most dire needs. "Power users" as one person put it (or more like, people who can budget & plan their money I call it), would just as easily manipulate one system as they would another. In fact, having two systems means one can easily dominate the other if given the chance. I think there are far more important game mechanics to work on than the economic interface, though I would like to see better organization on the current Auction House window (a button to show only
x
amount of items in a stack, for example).
