Made my first character a Tauren Druid, I love animals/monsters and being a Minotaur-like character who could change into animals and fulfill multiple roles sounded like the coolest thing ever (I got a nasty surprise when I hit endgame at 60).
I also sort of clicked with the Tauren lore/culture, being a patient, peaceful person myself, I admired their Native American-like beliefs and architecture.
Today I'm still all about the Hybrids (My druid is Feral and I have a Shadow Priest and Ret Paladin), being able to dish out big damage while staying alive is greatly satisfying to me. :)

My first toon that I took seriously was and still is a Tauren Hunter. It reflects me quite well I believe.
I'm an individualist when it comes to being in a crowd of people. Example would be at a gathering somewhere, I tend to walk away from the circle, or break out of the circle and listen, observe and contribute my two coppers from 'outside'. So as a player, I tend to like to solo and stand by myself.
Out of virtual reality, I like to explore facets of life, the world, situations, people, etc. In virtual reality, I like to explore the world, scout around, see what's happening without being noticed.
I don't especially like to attack anyone without cause, even if they are an opposing faction. This reflects me out of virtual reality. I won't usually start up an argument just because.
I like to offer a supporting role rather than under a spotlight. This is equivalent to my position throughout my career. Friends, associates and clients always say I am leader material, but I like to think that I am someone who supports the leader rather than be one.
The fact that I have kept the same combat pet since mid 2005 also reflects my own sentimental value in things that may otherwise seem meaningless for others. You may even catch me petting her every now and then and go out of the way to specifically get her stacks and stacks of Zanger Trout. ^_^
Anyhow, as Roxanna above me had mentioned, I also find Tauren lore quite similar to Native American culture and lore. There's a certain romanticism about that I really adore.
My other main toons: Tauren Restoration Shaman, Tauren Protection Warrior and a Blood Elf Holy/Disc Priest.

Interesting.
The very very first character I made was a Forsaken rogue. It had nothing to do with the lore, or any knowledge at all of the game or the gameplay mechanics. I just thought it was funny to be a zombie pickpocket.
My characters change frequently, with the exception that there's a priest and paladin on every server. Not because I'm devoutly religious, but just because I have the most fun - bar none - playing as a religious fanatic. Bow in reverence to the Light or burn before it.
In any event, I think it's more
how
I play than who I play that reflects who I am. I use a lot of hybrid classes, and I even find hybrid uses for classes that are supposed to mainly do one thing. Survival hunters, arcane mages, using the Holy tree of a paladin (Blessed be the Light in all things) for damage more than healing...that's kind of how I get down. It's largely because I get bored quickly, and I can't stand just doing one thing over and over again. I need to feel like there's a challenge to things, and that my individual input matters. I don't like thinking that if I just up and left, my group would do just fine.
I suppose that's one reason I don't raid. I could probably handle raid healing, since there's an obvious -
obvious
- and immediate reward there, but...there's no way I could ever sit and just press, for example, the hunter-macro button over and over. Yes, it increases your DPS. It's also so easy, a monkey could do it.
(I'm not knocking it, if that's your thing, by the way. Some people like contributing to a larger goal. More power to you. Just not my thing.)
I need to feel a reward, is all. That's one reason I solo a lot, that's why I don't really join guilds. I actually once created a brand new character and gave him the tradeskill of herbalism to get the earthroot for a
quest
for one of my other characters. For me, there's more of a sense of accomplishment in me finally being able to make a
few
things
by
myself
, "useless" as they might be, than there is in just being one cog in a wheel that downed Gruul, or whathaveyou.
So, yeah. More how I play than who I play.
I do have a lot of draenei, though. I like their weapon use animations. The ones for humans are pretty bleh. Dwarves are all right, and I suppose night elves are, too.
I cannot, however, play as a gnome. I can't take them seriously.
And before everyone in the Horde came starts laughing, I also can't play as a blood elf. I can't take you guys seriously, either...although for different reasons.
Hm. I have every class represented, and every race except for those two. Go figure.
Also, I can't use/equip anything if it looks stupid, or has a stupid name. That's one reason I can't equip anything "...of the monkey", I can't use most of the leather headgear midgame (no one really needs to look like a 1930's football player), and...
just
no
.
"You'd gimp your DPS for--"
For my dignity?
Yes.
In a heartbeat.
...that's the kinda guy I am, too.

Great Topic.
My main is a NE hunter on Terokkar, picked him because I tend to be more independent and like to do things on my own (I started playing WOW last summer when my wife and kids were away at my inlaws for a few weeks.)
But rolled a warrior on another server (Kilrogg) when I found out when my best friend from college played .
I now do raids with my NE Hunter with my guild but since then have rolled several other toons all depening on what mood I am. I even made a lvl 19 twink for days I just need to vent a lot of anger and stress.

My main is a blood elf warlock, which I choose for its skin and its ability to play solo. I'm not really concerned with outer looks but I am a fairly individualistic person. I also tend to think I'm better than everyone else, definitely a BE trait! ;)
I'm also leveling a priest, which matches my RL job: helping others and getting the blame if something goes wrong...

I chose the forsaken just because they live in sewers, and my rooms a mess? Somewhat the same :p But for real, I liked the Forsaken looks, not that they're evil, but that they're basically just Humans without flesh.
Fury/Arms Warrior cause I like Big Swords and dealing some nice damage. Couldn't stand to tank :[
If I wasn't so lazy though, I'd love to roll a Priest. Shame I can't get past level 10, its just way too boring. I love to heal, I sometimes hop on my friends Priest whom he doesn't play anymore and heal some heroics. It's fun to sit back, spam a couple buttons, and let the gear roll in.

I spose my characterskinda reflect my personality a bit
My first character was Tauren Druid. Rolled druid coz i thought the whole idea of changing forms and doing whatever was needed rly cool. Now im 70 my gear kinda reflects my short attention span and likeleness to get bored easily (full epic tanking, feral dps, healing sets and am now collecting moonkin gear), I dunno have tried to play mage, hunters, rogues and found that while lvling didnt rly enjoy how easy it was :)... lol. Rolled Tauren coz all my freinds were horde and tauren is only horde race which can be druid (all my freinds actually rolled tauren aswell sop that worked nicely).
My next Character was Human Paladin... kinda lvl'd him just to make a point. That's about it rly.
Currently lvling shadowpriest(will be healer) and warrior(gonna be tank). I tried to lvl as holy/prot but got bored with low lvl nooby PuGs who didnt know what 'buff meant' so went shadow/fury

That's odd... so many people who identify strongly with their druids...
I'm another one. My nelf Druid was the third character I rolled in WoW, within a few weeks of EU release, and I've never looked back. Mostly I've played Resto, I like healing, keeping folks alive, and the ability to stand back from the fight a bit and observe. Unlike some folks I've never found the concentrated play a strain... the other part of druid that I really like is the freedom it gives, you have so many options outside in the world in general, and there pretty much is no place where you can't go, one way or another.
Though I have to say I love my gnome warlock as well, there's something really intricate and beautiful about the way you end up shunting health and mana around.
I think there's no doubt that the character you identify with does reflect your personality to some extent, although the relationship is a bit more complicated than "all people who play rogues like to hide and gank". But so many people play alts, that the knowledge is unlikely to do anyone much good ;)
