Three main reasons that pre-TBC was so easily shed-
1) Stamina Increase, nuff said
2) Blizzard's itemization sucked pre-TBC: strength on healing gear, +magic damage on hunter gear, blah blah blah...
3) A lot of spec's didn't even have sets of gear for them, so if you were an enhancement shaman, you quickly upgraded to Outlands gear
None of these issues exist anymore, so I doubt the Northrend gear will replace our S4/T7 gear until the level cap

This is exactly right. Poor itemization preBC. Remember spirit on all that stuff?

Higher raid gear will be very good a long time, maybe until you reach 80.
I recently saw an alpha screenie displaying a 2h-Sword. It was a lvl75 item with 145DPS. The actual Kil'Jaeden sword has 148DPS?
The same can be said for T3 items - they were still valuable at early lvl70. Set boni are something you shouldnt underestimate.

Resilience is something you shouldn't underestimate either, for those players who level on PvP servers and have to face the other faction while grinding :)

The person I was arguing with said this wouldn't matter because to a lot of WoW players, it's "like crack and they won't give it up", but I think if you anger enough raiders, whether they are hardcore or casual by making their hard work obsolete with quest greens (again) then they aren't going to be nearly as forgiving this time.
Some raiders on vanilla WoW got angry indeed, but now everyone knows of the gear reset that happens at expansions. They will be forgiving, dont worry. ;-)

What happened when TBC launched was that people in tier 1 or below got green and blue quest reward upgrades almost immediately. Tier 2 took a couple of levels to replace, but most tier 3 was viable all the way to 70 and didn't really start getting replaced until Karazhan. The best of the normal mode dungeon level 70 blues were at best on par with tier 3 stuff.
I bet that it's a similar situation we'll face with WOTLK. People in tier 4/season 1 or below will probably start replacing their gear immediately. Tier 5/season 2 and tier 6/season 3 will take a bit longer where Tier 7/season 4 gear (and the high end badge loot) will probably not really be replaced until low end raiding/heroics at 80 takes off.

Actually, people were still wearing some parts tier 2 when they entered Karazhan at TBC launch. Some pieces were not replaceable until the level 70 instances.
Some special exceptions continued to be viable even deep into raiding. Eg.
Styleen's Impeding Scarab
and
Rejuvenating Gem
.
Tier 3 was viable past level 70 dungeons in many cases.
And also, what is this tier 7 you are rambling about? It isn't in the game yet, so why would people have to replace it?

I'm only saying again things that were said previsouly, but to summarize :
Reasons that made the gap big :
- item budget points for stamina were cut by 2, so all BC items had way more stats than pre-BC ones
- most peoples were in green/blues and some in T1 gear (and very few in T2/T3), ie low quality gear. The new badge and PvP gear creates a situation where much more players have a higher level of gear so the difference with WotLK gear will be smaller for everyone.
- lack of itemization for offspecs contributed to overall low gear level for those offspec. BC gear nicely filled that need startign with the first quest rewards.
For all these reasons, you can be certain that the gear gap between BC and WotLK will be much smaller than between vanilla and BC.
Why it's stupid to whine about a gear reset anyway :
- gear is mainly supposed to be a means to an end
- gear you got helped you during all the time you wore it. Even with the expansion, it will also help you to level faster than someone in greens
- even now, would you refuse to take a better epic for one slot just because you got another item the day before ? I don't think so. Do you consider T5 to be stupid because you had to work to get T4 and then have to replace it.
Did that previous item go to waste ? Maybe, but that's the way the game goes. Reset or regular raiding/new PvP seasons don't change anything to that.

Personally, I don't care if my first Northrend drop is a green that is better than the T5+ items I'm wearing. They did it too me when BC came out and I still continued to play. I look forward to "much more better" drops than what I currently have. It won't get me ticked off to replace the epic item I have earned. I'll just earn better ones.

i think it's a good idea if no matter how good your gear is now, it's never good enough for lvl 80 related things
why?
because otherwise the high end ppl at this point will have an advantage and some lower heroics/raids will be skipped leaving the ppl that don't have that good gear now stranded....

I can't get onto the wow forums to find you a source at the moment, but devs have stated several times that there is not going to be the jump in itemisation at the release of WotLK.
The reason there was such a large jump at TBC release was there was a huge rebalancing of stats, and so the new gear worked on different itemisation goals (in particular Stamina). wotLK will not see this. People in T6 gear will most likely not be replacing items until L79 or so, unless tehy are itemising for a specific stat. The items in level 71-72 will be around S1 / early kara / 70 heroic quality.
This means that new characters going through TBC into WotLK directly will see a smooth gear transition, whilst those who have invested lots in their gear will get a good amount of use from it into the new content.
First you say it will be completely different from TBC launch, then you say it will be exactly the same as TBC launch... o.0
