This website is great if you are looking for more info on Death Knights. They have some videos from the Alpha testing with 2 Tauren Death Knights. Also, it shows the Necropolis and some other Death Knight related things.

No I didn't you are misunderstanding.
VAnilla Wow -> TBC large jump for the various reasona already stated
TBC -> WotLK smooth transition with early WotLK gear being T4 equivalent
Well you said people in tier 4 will replace it quickly, while people in tier 6 will have good use for it up to level 80. That's exactly the way it went with tier 1 vs. tier 2/3. I entered Karazhan with several BWL drops, as did most others.
So it looks like WotLK will be more or less the same as TBC.

When BC arrived I was in T1, so called T1+, and T2. The only piece that lasted to 70 was my T2 head piece with the ZG enchant. Without the enchant it would hae been replaced by a lvl 65 green. Most of the other gear was gone by around 63. I expect exactly the same result again. Why? Simple. New players are not going to raid /endlessly PvP, do heroics for badges at level 70 so that they can get to the new content. Blizzard wants those new dollars.
Also new talent trees, new spells/skills, etc will change the gear requirements even for the folks in T5/T6.
Then consider this. Those of you in T6 will blow through the first 4 or 5 new levels like tissue paper. You'll probably end up getting to the better gear even quicker than the rest of the playing community. You'll spend LESS time in your T6 than the guy in T4 will in his.
Bet on it.

From the posts on the WoW europe WotLK forums that's what I understood too... From what I remember from the BC launch, I think my SP left Hellfire Peninsula with around 300 spelldamage, which at the time was about equivalent to a full set of Blackwing Lair mage epics. My druid healer tho was still using BWL healer gear at 70, for quite a while.
So I guess we can expect a very quick upgrade in terms of offensive power to roughly Black Temple levels, and then zones that are suited to that gear level and give a slower upgrade of general stats and healer gear afterwards, topping out at level 80 around the max gear level that's now available from Sunwell.
Well, they have to level the playing field somehow...
Ps. What's really funny is that a fresh 60 dps caster pre-TBC had 0 spelldamage - my little gnome Warlock alt at lvl 52 now has about 230 and was slicing through Burning Steppes like a hot knife through butter when I last played.

He is talking about a Shadow priest and he is right. Around 300 spell damage is gained at HfP, some of the blues endure up to the 70 ding. A mage having 300 spelldamage is an average value assuming not every mage completed BWL and got everything he needed. Like earlier said a complete T2 set is not comparable to any item of the Outland. The set boni are just to good. I knew some mages leveling completly in T2, only changing weapons, rings, necks and cloaks meanwhile.
Well, whatever... This doenst seem to happen in WotLK. The new blues posted so far are lvl75 and still a bit weaker than Sunwell items. T5 will probably easily last until 75, T4 will mean a good start into Northrend.

I'm not sure if there is a site where we can gather generals statistics about the average and mean level of the gear for all level 70s playing. Its not unreasonable given the data gathered by wowarmory for example. We'd also need to understand the ratio of PVP to PVE gear. We also need to characterize the population of mains at any given level.
Blizzard doesn't just want to keep the dollars spent by people who have level 70 raiders and/or PVPers. They want the dollars of the people who have yet to reach 70 and those newly drawn to the game by the expansion. That means that for all practical purposes they need to level the field so the vast majority of players get gear in WotLK that is better than in BC. The addition of the death knight makes this almost mandatory. Who wants to level a new class in a situation where they are behind the gear curve of other classes because of historical gear? For that matter, while experiencing new content is a great time, most of us like the sweetener of drops that we can use.
So how soon will gear get replaced? Its a business decision made by Blizzard to maximize the numbers of subscriptions from the three groups I mentioned. If we could get the market data I mentioned in the beginning we could make a few graphs and identify the ideal gear progression curve in terms of Blizzards revenues. You can bet they have already done this.
Using myself as an example. For a variety of reasons I rerolled a main. He's geared enough for Kara and the rest of t4, but will never have full T4 gear because his crafted gear is better. If the expansion is out in the next 120 days, I'll see a bit of T5 but never make it to T6. When the expansion hits, my goal is to make 80 with in 5 days of the first 100 players on my server and start new endgame content. I've learned from experience that getting there early will effect my access to endgame for the entire life of the expansion.
It is my expectation that when I ding 80, assuming I ran the appropriate instances and built the appropriate rep while leveling, I'll be able to attune (if necessary) for the beginning raid instance and go. If its clear that I will still be disadvantaged in qualifying for WotLK raids because I don't have T5 -T6.5 gear I will quit WoW. I'm perfectly willing to grind level 80 heroics
as an adjunct to raiding
as long as the first raid in the progression is viable with out it. Put more simply. When it comes to getting into raids, level 78-80 instance gear better put me on an equal footing with the best pre-WotLK gear or Blizzard will lose my money. I'm guessing that represents a reasonable percentage of Blizzards current customers and the majority of new customers.

However things go, I'm going to continue gearing myself. If I can make Northrend really easy from the getgo and get more challenging as things go on, i have a better chance at killing Arthas come the end of Wrath.
Less time spent getting to 80 means im into raids faster. If I'm into raids faster, i can get to T9 (lol) raids and get ready for the release of Arthas.
If gear is easily replaced, which I know it will be come later northrend, so be it. I enjoy maxing my character out to its full potential, whether I be in t5 farming t4 or t6 farming KJ. (first example is true)

It will probably be like last time, the tier 4 raid gear will last till lvl 74 and be replaced by greens, higher tier 5 and arena gear etc probably be replaced easily at 78-80 odd.
Would people prefer there gear wasnt replaced with better stuff? no? thought not lol
All this whining about "OMG I GRINDED FOR AGES" for there tier 4/5 whatever and its all wasted? no hell no! your gonna have a easier step into the new higher level mobs. my mage started outlands with nearly full magisters set and did great, my hunter in T1 and T2 will just do it sooo easily! where as my newer characters in greens/random blues who just hit 58 for outlands had it lot harder .
walk into northrend with raid gear/arena gear or even the S2 stuff will make it quite easier i reckon

Dualwielded high warlords blade all the way to 70, never died a single time due to low dmg or health.
