Fire vs. Frost: The Answer
Return to board index
Post by

The basics:
Fire does more damage, mathematically, overall.
Frost does less damage, can sustain more damage, blue > red.
The answer?
Re-spec given the fight, and stop arguing in a circle.
Theres more than just A'lar/Hydross that offer situational differences.
If you want to raid, be prepared to pay; spec optimizes your performance more than flasks and pots.
Or spec arcane.

I think that some may argue about the sustainability of fire damage in a raid fight. I've always been an advocate of frost power, but I will rarely say that Frost is the only way to go. People tend to look at Frost versus Fire in a very non-objective fashion as if it were a Disciplines priest vs a Holy priest in reference to raid healing, but it's just not the case. The arguing over "which spec is better" is almost always perpetuated by the ignorant who lean one way or the other because "someone said so" and not because they looked at the situation.

Arcane is quite the awesome medium between the two; although personally I'm respeccing between 2/48/11 and 18/0/43 as the fight calls until I actually get 2t5

Fire is not at ALL a problem to keep sustained DPS up. Before you go into a boss fight, flip on Mage Armor, summon your emerald, and go! I've fought mag, popping haste pots/Icy Veins (I'm side frost, for that spell) and I didnt even have to use Evocate or potions after nearly ten minutes of constant fireballs. It's not really a problem.

I'd like to know your DPS for that fight.

I'm a fire mage moving into t6 content. I'm spec'd 0/40/21, and I have no problem what so ever sustaining dps. I never run out of mana, or stop casting fireballs. Just use mana gems, evocate properly (if at all), and mana pots.
My dps runs from about 1000-1400 depending on the fight. Should go up more soon since I'm normally the only mage in raids and warlocks will use curse of elements only!
edit: also, most of the time i'm using destruction potions instead of mana pots especially when boss is >20%
