well, I haven't started raiding yet, but I should be soon, but what usually is the main role of a frost mage in a raid? is it the same as most dungeons? Like doing cc, and then putting in dps on everything else(with the occasional save the healer with frost nova and also trying to tank the boss when the group wipes) and a human vending machine? Is there a specific rotation you should use as well? I usually just frostbolt spam and use the occasional ice lance, but there is probably a different kind of rotation for raids. Also would you want more spell crit or more spell damage from gems and armor, also spell haste if it is applicable. and lastly... lol what specific spec would be better for raiding as a frost mage, like frost arcane? or deep frost, or something with clearcasting? thanks for the answers ahead of time (hopefully lol) btw, i'll take an ice cold water, i'm rather thirsty from all that typing

Your roll in a Raid is DPS. Of course you're responsible for the occasional sheep, and for snacks and drinks, so make sure you have the top level Tomes for those, and you've trained the Table.
IMO, the best PVE Frost Mage spec is this one - (

Of course you can tweak it as you want, but there is nothing "extra" there, and no DPS Increasing talents you're missing. I suggest only 4/5 Winter's chill because 80% chance to apply is just fine. You might need to toss 1 extra FB to get a full stack up there, but unless you simply can't cast for 10 seconds, it will stay up there the whole fight. You can forgo Clearcasting if you're not having Mana issues, but you may want to keep it so stacking Haste is easier.
You're going for Hit > Damage = Haste > Crit
Haste and Damage are interchangeable so long as you've got the Mana for it. If at the end of long fights you still have plenty of Mana, it's time to start stacking Haste. Don't worry about it too much off the bat though, you won't have access to a lot of Haste gear when you first start Raiding.
But please, please, please, Cap your spell hit ASAP. This isn't to say forgo 100 spell damage for 10 Hit, but 10 hit vs 20 damage? Go with the hit.

ha. who invited you Caribou? ;-) Kidding of course. This is simply like having a lounge for those with a common interest. Like the Lodges of the old days. Of course, you're always welcome in our chilly igloo!

Personally, I do prefer the Deep Frost/Meditation build.

This is only an approximation I use 2 points into frost bite instead of nova because I like it procing when I'm grinding for dailies. Those two points are inconsequential to your raid DPS and incidental for gaining access to the rest of the frost tree.
The reason I like this build over what you've linked is that you can really save on some mana if need be and the longer you can fight for, the better your DPS will be in comparison to someone who OOM's. Granted, we have enough mana gems, pots, and evocation to keep us topped off but I do like to have the ability to have longevity through extremely long fights as well if I need to.

When raiding, Shatter and Imp CoC are worthless talents. No boss can be frozen for shatter, and you should never be close enough to throw out a CoC (though even if you are that close, it's a waste of mana).
The 18/0/43 Meditation build gets you the most raiding bang for the Frost Mage, if you've got the spell damage. If you find yourself still a bit low on that stat (say < 900), 40/0/21 is a darned good build as well.

This thread just invites fire mage trolls...
That being said fire dps is just plain better.
