Honestly.. the reviews I got of AoC lead me to believe that it is a very mediocre/average, rather unpolished game.
The only people who really seem to love it are ones who hate WOW/Blizzard.
The reality is though that it has shipped a million boxes, sold about 400k and I'm guessing after the first month will have about 150k subscribers. Out of 4 people I know who bought the box, none will be subscribing. (very anectodal I know). At 150k subscribers, it will have a very limited development team... Between bugs, and features that were supposed to be in the game at launch,but still aren't in.. I doubt you can expect anything progress in the game for awhile

Considering you're asking on a WoW forum, expect heavily WoW biased answers.
Jord at Alla tried it and so far his review of it is the only I've seen on a WoW forum. As in an actual review at least.

Though who say its unpolished and the like to put it down. Welcome to MMOs where every game ships before its actually ready. WoW certainly had its load of troubles on launch. Granted all I really remember of it was massive server problems. Been to long.

I've played AoC for a month, and have to say it was kinda fun. The melee combat was a bit more engaging, with the combo's and stuff, and the first 20 levels has decent voice-acting all the way through, which helps. The graphics look nice, a bit more gritty and detailed than wow's cartoon style.
But - the class balance sucked, the voice acting disappeared after the first 20 levels, there was no rapid travel between zones (eg no flight points), the loading screens got on my nerves after a while, you had to grind to level for a bit at level 50 when you completely ran out of quests, the crating system was broken, it crashed too often and the classes were too simple at higher levels. So I quit my subscription.
In the end, it just wasn't polished enough to spend my precious gaming time on.

These discussions always make me laugh, as they are almost always completely pointless. It is as if people believe that there is only one game doing well at any given point in time. Sure WoW is doing great, and because of their success, any new games or other form of competition will pose as a great threat.
The bottom line is, WoW has been going up and down in numbers for some time now, from quitters to people re-joining to new users and old users returning for some old nostalgic adventuring. The avid users (the ones who tend to never quit until the game completely dies) will argue to the death that any game showing competition will die quickly and never compare.
Age of Conan has a lot of problems right now, and it may appears as if Eidos/Funcom are not making as big an effort as they could be about publicly explaining the sluggish responses. However little it may seem they are paying attention, you can guarantee it's there and at 150%. No company wants to form a product only to have it fail. World of Warcraft started out the same way, with hundreds of problems, and it took them years before it became the "perfect" game, as so many users describe it.
In closing, Age of Conan is an amazing game, it is also a game filled with many problems, problems just like world of warcraft had that were corrected in time. And you know what, people cried and whined about World of Warcraft's problems easily as much as AoC if not more(god even the mention of a rogue or a warlock' death coil sets off a bomb)
This entire thread is dedicated to many users who were strong enough to publicly devote their love for World of Warcraft, despite it's many initial flaws, but who are now no longer any more willing than to write a few words of distaste about AoC's beginning problem issues.
A great quote I found about MMO's that mostly proves true is as follows: -- Games are never as fun as their hype. It's still going to be the same game doing the same things as 90% of the MMOs since EQ1 wrote the template for 3D MMOs.
-- We all want to go back to that wonderful time when MMOs were new to us, and we were confused newbies dropped into a mysterious world.
-- That happens only once. Now we join an MMO, wonder how to get to level 50 the fastest, and go out to grind levels killing orcs.
-- You can't ever be a newbie again. Warhammer, WoW, AoC, Lotro, or any other MMO won't give you what desire. You, I, and many other people won't be satisfied until once again we can be dropped, newbs once more, into a mysterious realm of which we know nothing.

Eidos/Funcom had a good concept in mind when they created AoC, but they made some key errors along the way, the most glaring of which is this:
Never release a product before it is finished.
As shockingly obvious as that may seem, this little nugget of wisdom seems to have escaped AoC's creators completely.
There was a time when MMOs were new, and no one knew what to expect, and some teething difficulties are inevitable when creating new product for a market that barely exists. Over time, the products in any market will improve due to competition; the companies that can adapt and improve will survive, while the ones that can't hack it will fail and be forgotten. After a certain point, a new company wishing to enter this market will have a much tougher task than their established competition, because the bar has been raised by those same companies.
WoW is established, polished, and has a fairly loyal fanbase. To compete with such a product, any company's offering must have all its bases covered, which AoC does not. In terms of reliability/playabilty, it's the equivalent of a 1970s AMC Gremlin compared to WoW's brand new Honda Civic. Unlike the Gremlin, AoC does look a lot better...When it's running. But, considering the competition for the entertainment dollar, any product that does not provide even basic playability will not be embraced by the consumer, when there are better options available.
TL;DR: Eidos tried to beat the clock and released AoC too early. It looks great, but it has serious issues, much like every car ever built in Britain. Note that what is left of the British auto industry is no longer owned by the British. Keep that in mind whenever you expect someone to buy something based only upon its looks, hoping they'll ignore its performance and/or reliability.
