Yes, you deserved to get it, since it was an upgrade and you were the only one able to use it.

Generally accepted loot hierarchy:
-Need: Is it a good upgrade for someone? If so, they get it. If it's good for more than one person, they roll.
-Can use (like the mace we're talking about): If it's off-spec, you might get some use from it, so it goes to whoever could use it. Again, roll for it if more than one person could get some use from it.
-DE: No one needs it, no one wants it, and enchanting mats are more useful than 3g67s or whatever it will vendor for. Everyone rolls for it.
I see nothing wrong with rolling need on something, if you're the only class who can use it. Fact is, you get more use from the item than they would from whatever comes from DEing it. If they persist in whining, tell them to find a new tank (and watch everyone instantly stop complaining).

Though there was 1 instance I did a lot (Bot maybe?) that had some ret feet drop... i kept needing them and selling them (repair bill money mostly)... noone every said anything.
I love your antics
In my case, since I rarely die, I use instance grey loot to make money :P

If it was needed by me, i would've needed. but i always say i'm needing it. that way they all expected it. rather than just someone needing it.

or selling greens for it.
But some greys really do fetch a nice bit of gold. esp the plate and 2h stuff!

I would of been angry at you needing on it to, unless you talked to us and descused why you wanting it.
Its not a main upgrade so a straight out need shouldnt be done. If youed asked and said that you wanted it to PvP or whatever with Id let you take it seeing we cant use it but only if you explained otherwise we should have fair rights for the shard.
There needs to be a committee meeting about every piece of blue loot that drops now? Give me a break. You can buy shards, dusts, essences, and whatever else you need for enchanting relatively cheap. You cannot buy a mace of that quality for the same price; BoP drops rarely have a BoE equivalent, and if they do, it's very rare and extremely expensive. If no one else in the party can possibly use the thing, it goes to the person who can. If they don't want it, then it gets rolled for. I suppose, if you're really petty, the remaining 4 people should random roll, and the one who got the loot gives them the cash equivalent of whatever it might DE into...
Here's a hypothetical situation:

drops in Sethekk Halls. You have a warrior tanking and a paladin healing. The healer has no real use for the extra consecration power in his current role in that instance, so does the item that only a paladin can use go to the only paladin in the party (even though it's "off-spec"), or does everyone get an equal chance at a Large Prismatic Shard?

Let me point something out...
Was this a guild/friend run?? NO
Was the loot rules agreed on beforehand?? NO
That having been said. It is common practice, and common courtesy, to roll greed on everything that you cannot use/isn't an upgrade to your main spec
I always ask if anyone needs for their main spec. If no-one does I willl roll need for my offspec... If a main spec does need... then ill pass.
If they seriously complained that the tank needed on a 2H mace that wasn't a direct upgrade for the other group members main spec... they can bugger off.
(especially as you are the tank... there are almost 0 tanks... how often do you see anything but LF1M tank for xxxxx then G2G!!!)
Oh, and FYI.. the enchanter has NO obligation to shard and let everyone roll on it. In fact.. if it isn't a guild run.. I usually won't.
I will greed on everything..... if you want to benefit from turning useless drops into valuable shards... by all means pick up enchanting and have at it.

I saw the term "ninja" pop up a few times in the discussion.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMylc2Or1Ic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wruDuaOrlAs&feature=related
The term ninja is thrown around too much these days. After watching some pre BC 40 man ninja loot videos, this whole 5 man "ninja" on a blue nobody wants seems unimportant. I am sure there are some BC 25 man ninja loot videos out there but I just didn't feel like finding them.
Who here remembers the old loot window? The one that was just need or pass? They changed it to need, greed, or pass simply because of this story that was just explained here. If you don't want it, you pass. If you want to sell/DE it, you greed. If you need/want it, you need. There shouldn't have to be a committee, as phil mentioned.
There used to be a system on my server called the N V system. This is back when it was need, or pass. If an item dropped, everyone said N or V. N if you need, V if your vendoring. If everyone saids V, everyone rolled. If 4 people said V and one person said N, only that person rolled. The whole purpose of a greed button under the need button is so you can basically roll on the item, saying you want to SELL it or you WANT it rather than using the N V argument.
I was in RFD on my rogue. I was in a guild run, a 58 warrior was running us through. This was back in 2006 by the way. The healer was a pally who kept fearing all the undead.
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=2951
dropped. Being the rogue and everyone else was a caster, except the warrior, I rolled need. Who wouldn't? A level 30ish rogue would LOVE that item. I got tagged as a ninja looter and kicked out of the group. Their explanation "EVERYONE can use a ring" I didn't see what the big deal was. They were planning on selling a ring that was a HUGE upgrade for me? And they called ME a ninja? Luckily the pally had feared one too many mobs and pulled too many groups and got himself killed and he was the only person who could rez. I had jumper cables but I was kicked out of the group and my "this is not your instance" timer was ticking. I said &*!@ it and left.
The moral of that story is that not everyone has a brain.
You were justified in what you did. You shouldn't have to explain yourself. What if you had asked? Were they going to tell you no? If its such a big deal then set master looter beforehand. Thats what its there for. If master loot was on and they wont hand it over, then you leave the group, write their names down and put them on your !@#$ list. Grab a few groups of mobs, bubble hearth, and tell them to get !@#$ed while your hearthing.
