another good way to know your general threat is to read your spells and abilities.
if they say adds X amount of threat you know to use that ability when tanking.
also there is a section specifically on Druid tanking in Bear form at this link
http://www.wowhead.com/?forums&topic=7507
It explains threat, how to generate it and how to keep it.
and the role you play as a druid tank
hope this helps and good luck on future instance runs

Threat is a per-enemy measure of how "interested" the enemy is in you. This means (for a Druid tank, anyway) that your primary target will always have the highest threat rating. Your DPS should be attacking that target, and only that target, until it is dead; during the fight switch targets very occasionally to get a bit of threat groundwork in, and be ready to drop a powerful attack on your new target once your original target dies.
A Swipe will AoE a group of enemies but it generates a finite amount of threat, so if a Mage drops a nuke of a Fireball on your non-primary target, he
will
pull aggro off of you; be ready with your Growl at that point. If he does it again, and pulls aggro
again
, his death isn't your fault - it's his, and don't let them tell you otherwise. :)

this is a newbish question, but shouldn't the mage be assisting you instead of just picking a random target?
In which case maybe he needs to die in order to learn
