I have been main tanking quite a while now for my guilds Karazhan and Gruuls Lair raids. But we are always struggling to clear kara or down gruul. Here is my armory.
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Gilneas&n=nowakIs there something I should do differently or is it just the healers problem, or is dps too slow? I mean, I am the main tank so obviously I am doing things right... right?
I doubt you will read all of this and most of it is in the stickies but I thought I would try and explain why you are your raids problem
To tank effectively
- Generate enough threat so that your DPS is not threat capped
- Survive
Threat GenerationStacking spell damage is the best way to increase your threat. It will increase the damage output from:
Improved Righteous Fury will multiply all that extra damage by 1.9. Oh and
Holy Shield gets an additional 1.35 bonus threat. And don't skip the 2nd level of
Improved Holy Shield you are giving up 10% bonus threat from one of your highest threat generators. And you can boost TPS from Judgements by 20% by picking up
Improved JudgementFor Kara level, get 200+ spell damage. Generally gotten from your weapon +
Superior Wizard Oil +
Enchant Weapon - Major Spellpower. if you are still lacking then drink a
Flask of Blinding LightFor a breakdown on how much TPS each point of spell damage gives you try:

Surviving:
Breaks down into 2 things. First reduce spike damage(crits and crushes) then increase health
Reducing spike damage is key to making healing you a reasonable task. There are 2 elements of reducing spike damage:
- Become uncritable, best done by getting defense skill to 490. Getting 5/5 Anticipation will make this task much easier
- Get uncrushable, 102.4 - 2.4(Anticipation)-5(Deflection) -30(Holy Shield) - 5(base chance to be missed) - 14.4(120 points of defense rating you got to become uncritable) = 45.6% avoidance/block you need to pick up. Take 15 badges and go buy Libram of Repentance to get an extra 5% from blocking
Once you have reduced spike damage stack stamina. Stacking stamina will give your healers more time to get their heals in especially with 5/5
Ardent Defender. AD just gets better as your health goes up
A quick note about talentsImproved hammer of Justice is not a good PvE talent primarily because bosses aren't stunable
Improved Devotion Aura spending 5pts to increase your armor by 344 points is just sad. 1st off as you get more armor the amount of mitigation from the armor is reduced. Using the formula: DR% = Armor / (Armor + (467.5 * AttackerLevel - 22167.5) for a raid boss the maximum extra damage reduction gained from the talent is 0.03% Looking at your armory profile you have 13555 armor, against a 5k hit the extra DR from the talent will save you 29.19 health a hit. Generally you should be tanking with either
Retribution Aura for the threat or a resistance aura for a specific fight

Assuming that the two priests in your guild are the ones that are healing at least part of the time (
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Gilneas&n=Faythanne and
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Gilneas&n=Eriee), your problem is definitely not your healers. ~1700 +Healing is perfectly fine for healing a main tank through the entirety of Kara.
If you want an example of a well-geared Paladin tank - from your own guild, no less - check out
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Gilneas&n=Divinemight. He's perhaps a little low on spell damage - 219 is just cutting the top edge of "required" - but his defense is well above the magic uncrittable number.
Stat priority for Paladin tanks: Gotta hit 490 Defense (uncrittable), push for 102.7% avoidance (uncrushable), at least 200 spell damage, then Stamina until you're at 14k health.
