I don't know how you levelled your Enhancement Shaman, but early on, my enh shaman alt had to drink constantly. His mana pool was pitiful, and he had no way to regen it. It was only until I got Shamanistic Rage and Water Shield that it became much better.
Of course, I could refrain from using spells at all, but I still had to heal, and killing stuff without using spells was painfully slow.
Before level 20, yeah shammys have to do a lot of the eat/drink. After level 20 it is a lot less it you use:
Mana Spring Totem
or
Healing Stream totem
Also by level 20 your should have +%5 crit talent and
Shamanistic Focus
, only shocking when that is up or to spell interrupt will keep your kill speed up and your mana regen needs down.
By level 41, with dual wield and stormstrike, you should be using even less mana per fight. If you get a crit with your 1st SS or a white attack, you can follow up with an earthshock and most nonelite mobs are dead or close too. That would be about 200 mana for the fight
As gnamy said, mages have to eat/drink much more than most other classes.
On the eat/drink downtime scale
Mages < Rogues < Shammy/Pally/Druid < Lock

I've never had qualms with making food/water for people that asked nicely, and even getting called to TB to make a portal to Shatt I'm ok with if the whisperer offers 7g off the bat. Rudeness is another story...
Locks are easy to kill, their pets easy to ignore, 2 crits + a fire blast and it's all over, provided it's all done from a distance (else fear-spam ftw).
Rogues are another story, if cursing would make demons appear I'd have my own legion, and the gods know I've cursed rogues from lvl 15 upwards all the time. Nevertheless they are dead useful for operations that require stealth or another CC (be it sap, stunlock, blind, etc.).
What really makes me angry is the lack of respect nowadays, people just don't appreciate mages anymore, we're taken for granted and treated like a commodity. Everyone forgets that we're easily the weakest class (hp- and defense-wise) and can keep our own only because we -know- our class and because we worked hard for it.
Leveling, and indeed playing a mage is like being irish, fight -> drink -> fight -> drink -> fight -> drink.
Anyway, the whole QQ business concerning locks will end (or at least diminish a bit) come the new expansion, and mages will get some of the old power back, with the new death knights making the locks QQ instead.
What goes around comes around, and the world keeps on turning.

I personally only end up drinking on my mage if the pull goes longer..
but then, my mage is a bit weird, full frost, extremely mana efficient, and im like one of the few oddball mages on my server to actually use Insightful Earthstorm Diamond on purpose.
way I figure is this, my rank 13 frost bolt costs 270 ish mana, meta gem procs and I get back 300.... proc rate surely doesnt suck, so over time i get off more spells..... course, i do prefer mage armor over all other armors.

theres my mage.... he could be tweaked a bit, but as far as the stats go, I seriously do not notice alot of drinking downtime.
I conjure my table, and by the end of a long instance (such as say Bot) I may have used at most 5 biscuits... assuming naturally that theres no shammie to drop their mana totem thingy, no spriest for that mana buff.. and whatever else is lingering around.... IF there happens to be a shadow priest, or a shammie who likes to dorp the mana totem.... i wont drink.
I'll pop a gem in a boss fight, mebbe a mana pot depending on on the fight itself
im not sure if this whole statement is just something I deal with (as in my spec, my gear, etc) but I do recall having a fire mage before and he was pretty much a drunkard.

lol am i the only mage who thinks fighting rogues is fun? i mean i have no problem keeping them away from me... the only thing i dotn like about rogues is when they run, they are so hard to catch
Come WOTLK, our rank 1 spells are getting nerfed. No more spending 2 MP on a rank 1 FB for the quick snare. No more getting rogues and druids out of stealth with rank 1 AE. Are you kidding me? Percentage of base mana spell costs? Rank 1 uses as much MP as rank 30? Serious nerf. I am seriously considering leveling an alt since all I do is PvP anyway.
This is the QQ thread, right?

The blink thing peeves me out more than anything.. it's such a good ability, it could be perfect, too many little things interupt it all together.
Ports and Water/Food aren't that bad on my server. I don't get asked that often, and if i do it's usually a wsp, and polite as well.
Usually get about 5g for a port or table for a couple people as well.

you must be a pretty bad shaman. that or you are in pvp gear. i tried out a sham from 1-67 before sellin all his stuff and mailin money to my mage. he NEVER had to drink. when i got back on my mage it got frustrating to have to drink every 4 or 5 kills. PS thats also one of the reasons i switched to frost, less mana consumption
Yeah, probably.
I only have quest gears, and a typical fight usually goes with attack, with shocks in between, then heal up when I'm done.
A couple of fights, and my mana was drained. Anything I did wrong?
