I spoke to a geek (they name themselves that) at BestBuy and he said that my laptop won't be able to use use more than 2gig unless I install Vista. Is this true?
Unless
you're
mistaken, he's outright lying to you to sell you an expensive product. If you're sure you're right about what he said, contact Best Buy's corporate headquarters.
Windows XP Home and Professional 32-bit editions can run with 2 Gigs or more of RAM, but because of 32-bit code limitations, the computer will not recognize any more than like 1.5 or 1.7 Gigs (dont remember the exact amount right off hand.)
But in order to take full advantage of 2 gigs and more of RAM in Windows XP, you have to have Windows XP Professional 64-bit version.

According to the official Microsoft website, as well as various tech support sites I've read, Windows XP Home and Pro 32-bit can support up to 4 gigs of RAM with Memory Hole Remapping enabled.

XP supports up to 4 gig, but can address in the vicinity of 3 gigs. Hence, more than 3 gigs of ram in XP is virtually useless.
