Every 25-man should have one, that way your other pallies can put judgments on the target and your crusader strike will keep them up. 10-mans do okay with this too.
However, if you're in a situation where the only need is "dps" then it's a difficult argument to say that you'll put out equal DPS to a rogue. Good DPS? Sure, why not.. but not as much (unless the rogue they get is undergeared).

nobody realy want a ret pally!!!!!!!holy FTW port sucks druid will aways be better! While this is obviously a highly informed, well-thought-out post, I'm going to have to disagree. Since the beginning of the game, talent trees have been ever changing and evolving. Every class and (to some extent) every spec can prove to be very effective in a raid environment.
Think for a moment just what you can see on the surface that retribution paladins can bring to the raid. The crusader strike judgement refresh is sometimes situational, but just applying
Judgement of the Crusader
increases the critical strike chance of
all
raid dpsers by 3% against that target. That's a very significant boost in damage output for everyone. Retribution paladins also contribute another set of blessings, as well as a very efficient amount of dps themselves. Paladins are one of the select few classes that have a debuff that affects so many raiders' damage output.
As for protection paladins, well, I couldn't imagine dealing with Hyjal Summit trash without one. The aoe tanking acumen that protection paladins are able to demonstrate is absolutely unrivaled by any of the other tanking classes. For doing any instance for which the paladin is overgeared, having a protection paladin tank everything is optimal for extreme speed and efficiency.
As for your grievance, carterm, the acceptance (or lack thereof) may be just a remnant of a distant past time, where retribution was all but worthless in any serious dps situation. Some people have trouble realizing that they can be just as proficient as anyone now, and the only way for you to prove yourself is to keep upgrading your gear and strategy for maintaining maximum dps. Show them what your class can do, and maybe they'll be able to swallow their pride and let you show what you can do to contribute to their groups.

As others have stated, Retribution Paladins have come a long way since the days when they really were a gimped hybrid DPS spec. Will Retadins replace Rogues, Mages, or Warlocks for core raid DPS? Never - but they bring to a raid a number of bonuses that other classes can't match.
A properly geared, properly played Retadin can put out above-average DPS - say, within the top 5 DPSers of a 25-man raid. They also can act as an emergency off-tank and toss out a few extra heals when the skit hits the fan. Factor in the fact that they bring in another Aura and set of Blessings, as well as the oft-mentioned refreshing of all Paladin Judgments against the target and a 3% increase to crit chance for all DPS, and Ret Pallies are amazing to have in high end raids.
