... hooked on phonics worked for me.
In any case, you might want to go mage. Leveling affliction for a warlock is what most who have made it to end game with a lock will suggest... and they aren't great for run-throughs in comparison to any specced mage, and don't do lump damage. Warlocks do have a lump damage spec (Destruction) but most experienced warlocks will tell you to not go Destro until you get some higher-end gear... leveling Destruction is a bad idea. Also, most people are turned off by the fact that you have to go long distances to get your pet.
In my oppinion, go Mage... probably fire specced. I had the same problem myself and i'm thinking on leveling my mage. I was once frost specced (before all the mages got ice block, before icy veins, and before ice lance...) and was told that because of my playing style, I would best suit lock. Truth is, we can tell ya' what you 'should' roll, but you will never know until you do both.

The pet quests require a lot of running. I'm no expert, but the succubus quest you have to run to the barrens for. This involves running thru stv at a low level if you are ally. I think the sham fire totem quest was far worse tho.
Lock is better for pvp. You will get demolished in pvp as either, but locks have way more survivability, and do way better in arena/bg because of it. Mages are called "glass cannons" for a reason. They do a lot of damage, but die quite fast. Especially if you get a shadow step rogue on you.
If you don't want to be gimped in pvp, lock. If you want to own in pvp, warrior or rogue. Rogues are leet dps and lack the need of skills. That doesn't mean skills don't make you a MUCH better rogue, but they are easy mode IMO. Warriors are leet dps that require skills and a healer. They take a beating and put out big numbers, but don't survive as long as a rogue without heals.

Suggestion: Mage
Reason: Mages can dish out great damage in PvE and as soon as I read your post, I thought Mage.

Warlocks are nowhere near overpowered any more in a PvP environment, the only people who cry about Locks in PvP are bad at the game and/or outgeared.
If you want to do well in PvP initially, roll a Warrior, Rogue or Hunter. None of these classes suffer from spell interruption which cripples casters in PvP.

I say be a destro lock, it's practically the same play style of a Mage, but then you can go SL/SL and just own everyone in arenas.
