Ive been having issues on wowhead with loading the 3D model in the viewer, as well as loading screenshots for some time now .. the rest works fine, but these dont
Im assuming its because Im not getting the pictures/data from zamimg.com ?
Earlier it worked fine, but then it broke at some point.
Curiously enough, on my workplace wowhead still works fully perfectly fine (on any browser), but at home the models and screenshots dont load (also on any browser).
Im assuming its because my home ISP has some issue with zamimg.com ?
What can I do to fix this ? I can try contacting my home ISP, but what do I tell them ? Its not like they are purposefully blocking zamimg.com ... Did zamimg change something ?
Ive tried different browsers, cache reset, flush DNS, nothing helps.
http://www.wowhead.com/jsdebug
- here what I get is:
-----
Did not load pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/google_top_exp.js
-----
No errors on this call
-----
the "did not load" is an ad blocked my adblocker I think, otherwise no errors, but it still isnt working
Ive seen this:
Temporary solution: This will allow you to browse Wowhead normally.
1. Open up Notepad as an Administrator
2. Open %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
3. Add and save the following lines to the host file:
50.22.23.4 wowjs.zamimg.com
50.22.23.4 wowcss.zamimg.com
This will work temporarily--but the information will be changing in two months as we migrate servers, so please remove those lines before then.
^ can a wowhead tech person please confirm if this is legit or not and if so - can I still use those IPs or have they changed by now ?
any response is appreciated, I use wowhead a lot and would love to see full functionality restored at home
thanks

Not legit. Wall of text incoming.
So here's a little more info on what's going on exactly. All of our images, modelviewer stuff, and javascript and CSS all live on one "origin" server controlled by ZAM. If all of Wowhead's visitors tried to connect to this origin server, the server would fail.
Instead of having everyone connect to one server, we use Akamai as a
Content Delivery Network
(CDN). The way this works is we tell your browser "hey, get your images and scripts from zamimg.com." Zamimg.com points to Akamai's network. If you're in California, it points to an IP address near you. If you're in New York, you get a different IP address near there. Same idea around the world. So your browser would fetch those files from an Akamai server near you.
Where do Akamai's servers get the files? If the server near you doesn't have some of those files already cached, it asks the origin server at ZAM. Our origin server can handle requests from Akamai, because there's only a few dozen Akamai servers making requests, instead of all our visitors across the world.
So what's going wrong?
Even though most requests are using Akamai, we have so many different files that sometimes our origin server can't handle all the requests for updates from Akamai's servers. Our origin server and the storage behind it need to be upgraded to handle all the traffic. They haven't been upgraded in years. When our origin server is too slow, and fails to return a file, Akamai still thinks that empty result is valid, and then serves it to you (and anyone else who asks) until its cache expires and it checks again.
This is why the problem is so hit-and-miss. Some people in some locations access Akamai edge servers that have most files correctly cached. Some other locations have some invalid files, and it's different at each location, depending on which files were requested when the origin was too busy to respond.
If you set your hosts file to some other IP for zamimg.com
, it might work today, but tomorrow that edge server might have different problems, and next month Akamai might not even host zamimg.com on that IP, and you'd forget that you made the change to your hosts file, then you'll be back where you started and we won't know how to help you.
So now you're asking,
okay, but how and when will it be fixed?
I've been monitoring the situation and doing what I can to reduce the number of requests against our origin server, so that it works more consistently. But more importantly, we've repeatedly asked our ZAM Ops team to set up a new origin server. We've impressed upon them the urgency of this request, how it affects our users, and how it makes our site look when it doesn't work. Our Ops team is currently doing some server moves for Lolking, and once that's completed, our origin server is next on their list. I have not received any estimate, but my guess is this issue will persist for another 2-4 weeks. I know, it sucks. I hope I'm wrong and it gets fixed earlier than that.
This problem frustrates us as much as it frustrates you. I feel just as powerless to improve this situation. I'm doing everything I can to speed up this fix. I'm not even going to ask for your patience, because this sucks and should not have happened.
The only reason I'm explaining all this to you, is because I've been where you are now. I, and many other developers, have had questions for Blizzard in their API forums, and they rarely give details about the causes of API issues. So I'm trying to be the change I want to see in the world, and be as transparent as I can about the issues we face. Hope it helps.

@ Erorus thank you very much for the detailed response !
so bottom line is in the issue you described there isnt anything to do, but wait and hope this gets resolved after the proper server updates ?
nothing to be done on user end ?

I do have an update - we are pushing changes to Akamai which will increase the cache time for static data to help with site performance. This went through at 9:30 PM pacific and site performance may temporarily be slower as the site adapts to the changes.(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##perculia##DELIM##

I've been having problems since around the time of the last changes (sometime 7-10 days ago).
At random times the 'Same model as' along with the model viewer and armor set images will all fail to load and the page will timeout on me.
I've tried it in several up-to-date browsers all running on Win7 64bit SP1.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/7.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; .NET4.0C; .NET4.0E; rv:11.0) like Gecko

The above from a test using IE with no addons. All the ad content loads fine but not the stuff I wanted to actually see on the page.
Chrome, Chromium, Firefox and Pale Moon are also unresponsive when the site starts acting up.
Finally, it's not just my desktop PC that this happens on. I've tried browsing the current page on my phone (WiFi or mobile provider) or tablet (WiFi) with similar results.
No proxy in place
Tested with ISP/Open DNS and Google DNS.
Tested with a VPN in place and without.
DNS flushed/cache emptied/reboots natch.
The problem always seems to be a timeout when connecting to wow.zamimg.com (on various IP addresses). Sometimes it fixes itself in 10 minutes but I've also had 30+ minute downtimes too.
No other websites are ever impacted when this Wowhead problem occurs and it's not a lack of bandwidth on the connection when it happens either.

I have not been able to see any screenshots here for about a month now. Tried different browsers, but instead of picture I just get a frame to open, all grey and on lower left corner text saying "waiting for zamimg.com".

As an update, Wowhead will briefly be down for maintenance at 11pm PST on Thursday to address some of the static server issues.

Since the introduction of Outfits i am unable to use it because of the broken model viewer.

Still laggy, still problems with screenshots, still problems with searching items.
Hope this will be fixed.

Hey all - the maintenance has been pushed back to Thursday (tonight) at 11pm pacific.

The site was down for maintenance for approximately an hour today. Unfortunately, it did not fix the full issue and it will have to temporarily go down for maintenance again sometime next week. I will post when I have more details, thanks for everyone's patience!

This is what i see:

None of the maintenances fixed anything so far. Modelviewer still crashes the page, the 3D model on the sidebar hangs the page for a couple seconds and only shows a white model with no textures. Most images on pages don't load.
For example this picture doesn't load for me:

This "zaming" server doesn't work.

Absolutely the same thing here, both on Opera and Chrome. It was like that since last year and it's incredibly infuriating. So infuriating, in fact, that I completely stopped using wowhead for anything besides occasional check for the item drop source, and even then it's a painful experience that I want to end as soon as possible. No pictures, no screenshots, no models, no nothing. I can't even verify the look of a transmog piece and see alternative colors and similar models, which is usually the entire point of using a 3rd party site.

I can't see images either. Both on Firefox and an un-touched Internet Explorer. Since an untouched browser has the same behavior it is obviously something blocking images on your end.
Are you using a service that throttles certain IPs?
Not nice.

It's interesting, but I see your sample image. Fast and smooth.
Everything else is broken.
iidrn says that "Zamimg.com is DOWN for everyone. It is not just you. The server is not responding..."
It's good to be a part of a family if it supports you / it's hard if you are neglected.
Is Wowhead the Harry Potter of the ZAM family? :P

Still failing:

Still getting 500 errors from zamimg. Still can't use the site for what i need..
I've blocked wow.zamimg.com on the hosts file and now the website works perfectly. Apart from the fact that half the images and none of the 3D models work.

at this point most things seem to be working for me, except I still see this whiteness with some of the models (human male is one of them) in the 3D viewer
