Same thing happened to me when I was trying to help my cousin out. Kinda suxs but it also makes sense, I don't mind them doing this if there is less people selling level 70 characters to nubs.

XP in this case is based on how much % of the damage you do to the mob.

Sucks indeed, just wanted to get a new character to 70 the fast way because I just cba doing it the old slow way once again..
Questing is the fastest way to 70, especially since the XP changes in 2.3

When I helped my friend AOE grind, I would focus him out of group, run around in bear form gathering all the mobs and keeping their attention with Demoralizing Roar (which doesn't tap the mob, like Faerie Fire doesn't) and then as soon as he dropped his first frost nova, I backed off and started healing him.
Unless they changed that, I don't think healing detracts from the XP you get as long as you damage it for 100% of its health.

I've read a similar method where the pally gathers all the mobs, and a mage (70) waits at the entrance with the powerlevelee, the mage aoe's to either dead or nearly and the pally leaves group, heals the mage as neccessary. At this point my memory becomes a bit fuzzy, I think the pally then leaves the instance but maybe the mage does and the pally finishes the last of the mobs health (out of group) with one or two final consecrations. Like I said, my memory fails me on this but the way they described it, it should give the most XP possible to the powerlevelee. Never tested myself so I have no idea. IMO just go questing, its easier and you don't have to have (much) help.

Quests of the type "kill 10 xyz mobs" give great fast xp with a high level friend to one-shot them. You get stuff all for the kills, but the quest xp is good.
